Itinerary
- Day 1
Salar de Uyuni
Your day starts at an outdoor museum with ancient field trains, then you'll head to the Salar salt flats to see how salt is processed and check out the iconic salt hotel. After that, you'll make your way to Incahuasi Island, where volcanic rock and giant cacti give you great views across the white salt plain. The afternoon takes you north to Thunupa volcano where you can walk through pre-Columbian ruins at Pucara de Ayque and see the Coquesa Mummies. From there, Mirador de Thunupa offers crater views from high up. You'll spend the night at Hotel Tayka de Sal, which sits at the base of the volcano.

- Day 2
Salar to Desert Lagoons
Start this morning at Fish Island, then continue over to Mala Mala Bay on the opposite side of the salt flat. You'll explore Galaxy Cave, which has ancestral burials and petrified cactus inside. After that, head south to see the Cañapa, Stinking, Chiarkota, Honda and Ramadita lagoons, where lots of flamingos gather along with geese and Andean gulls, with snow-capped volcanoes in the background. The drive takes you through desert terrain with sand and pebbles and colorful rock formations. By evening you'll arrive at Hotel Tayka del Desierto and have regional food at the hotel restaurant.

- Day 3
Geysers and Lagoons
Before sunrise, you'll head out toward Sol de Mañana geysers and arrive at first light at the route's highest point around 5000m/16,400 feet, where it's quite cold. You'll walk across red, gray and scarlet mud near boiling pools. Next, Salar de Chalviri shows off white snow, ocher desert, blue water and white borax all together. Early morning brings you to Termas de Polques hot springs for a soak and breakfast. Later, you'll reach Laguna Verde at Licancabur volcano's base and watch the water shift from emerald to duller colors. Lunch stops at Laguna Colorada, where three flamingo species nest and their pink color comes from algae and plankton activated by sun and wind.
