Your driver picks you up in Moshi for the roughly 50-minute drive to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park gate, passing through the village of Machame along the way. Once at the gate, you'll start hiking through rainforest on a winding trail that climbs up a ridge toward Machame Camp. The lower sections tend to be muddy and slippery, so bring gaiters and trekking poles to help with footing. By evening you'll reach camp, settle in, and have time to rest and acclimate to the altitude.

  2. Day 2

    Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, you'll leave the rainforest behind and keep hiking uphill through a small valley. The terrain shifts to a rocky ridge covered in heather as you head west along a river gorge before reaching Shira Camp at the higher elevation. Once there, take time to relax, have dinner, and get a full night's sleep to help your body adjust.

    Landmarks

  3. Day 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Starting from Shira Plateau, hike eastward along a hill past the junction to Kibo's peak, then turn southeast toward the distinctive Shark's Tooth lava tower. You'll pass that tower and reach a second junction near Arrow Glacier before descending to Barranco Camp. Even though you start and end at similar elevations, this day plays an important role in acclimatization. After arriving at camp, have dinner and settle in for the night.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Hot Lunch / Lunch Box), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike from Shira Camp through semi-desert terrain to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp (10 km, 6-8 hours)

Following breakfast, leave Barranco and work your way through rocky slopes as you pass the Barranco Wall on your way to Karanga Valley campground. This is a shorter hiking day, specifically designed to help your body continue adjusting to the high altitude. You'll have most of the afternoon and evening to rest and recover.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Hot Lunch / Lunch Box), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike from Barranco Camp through rocky slopes past Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp (5 km, 4-5 hours)
    Landmarks
    Barranco Wall
    Karanga Camp
  5. Day 5

    Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After eating breakfast, head out from Karanga and continue hiking to where the Mweka Trail intersects, then press on to Barafu Camp. By now you'll have completed the South Circuit, which has given you varied views of the summit throughout the trek. Set up at camp, rest up, have dinner, and mentally prepare for tomorrow's summit push. From Barafu you can see both peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo from camp.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Hot Lunch / Lunch Box), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp via Mweka Trail junction (4 km, 4-5 hours)
    Landmarks

    Kibo Peak
    Barafu Camp
  6. Day 6

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

You'll start this day very early, heading out between midnight and 2am, and begin a steep ascent over loose scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This section is the most demanding part of the trek, both physically and mentally. At Stella Point (18,600 feet), take a short break and watch the sunrise if weather cooperates. Then hike about an hour more to reach Uhuru Peak, the actual summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point on the African continent. After that, you'll turn around and descend, stopping at Barafu for lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp in the upper forest section. Wear gaiters and use trekking poles on the way down to manage the loose terrain. Have your final mountain dinner and enjoy well-deserved rest.

    Meals
Lunch (Lunch at Barafu Camp during descent), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Guided ascent from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak via Stella Point (5 km ascent, 7-8 hours)

  7. Day 7

    Mweka Camp to Moshi

The lower elevations can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and poles will help you stay safe on the descent. At the gate, you'll receive your summit certificate. From there, it's another hour to Mweka Village where a vehicle waits to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi. Your seven-day Kilimanjaro trek comes to an end.

    · September 7th, 2021
I had an incredible experience hiking 7 days Machame Route of Kilimanjaro with Africa Natural Tours. Our head guide, Mathew, and assistant guide, Daud, were a pleasure to work with. Not only were they professional and always considerate of our safety, they were also fun and enjoyable to be around. The food was incredible, all the gear was top quality, and the price was very fair. I would highly recommend this company. Bottom line: I would 100% recommend this small, local tour company to anyone looking to climb Kilimanjaro or take in a safari.
