Itinerary
- Day 1
Moshi to Machame Camp
Your driver picks you up in Moshi for the roughly 50-minute drive to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park gate, passing through the village of Machame along the way. Once at the gate, you'll start hiking through rainforest on a winding trail that climbs up a ridge toward Machame Camp. The lower sections tend to be muddy and slippery, so bring gaiters and trekking poles to help with footing. By evening you'll reach camp, settle in, and have time to rest and acclimate to the altitude.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, you'll leave the rainforest behind and keep hiking uphill through a small valley. The terrain shifts to a rocky ridge covered in heather as you head west along a river gorge before reaching Shira Camp at the higher elevation. Once there, take time to relax, have dinner, and get a full night's sleep to help your body adjust.

Landmarks Shira Camp - Day 3
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Starting from Shira Plateau, hike eastward along a hill past the junction to Kibo's peak, then turn southeast toward the distinctive Shark's Tooth lava tower. You'll pass that tower and reach a second junction near Arrow Glacier before descending to Barranco Camp. Even though you start and end at similar elevations, this day plays an important role in acclimatization. After arriving at camp, have dinner and settle in for the night.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Following breakfast, leave Barranco and work your way through rocky slopes as you pass the Barranco Wall on your way to Karanga Valley campground. This is a shorter hiking day, specifically designed to help your body continue adjusting to the high altitude. You'll have most of the afternoon and evening to rest and recover.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After eating breakfast, head out from Karanga and continue hiking to where the Mweka Trail intersects, then press on to Barafu Camp. By now you'll have completed the South Circuit, which has given you varied views of the summit throughout the trek. Set up at camp, rest up, have dinner, and mentally prepare for tomorrow's summit push. From Barafu you can see both peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo from camp.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
You'll start this day very early, heading out between midnight and 2am, and begin a steep ascent over loose scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This section is the most demanding part of the trek, both physically and mentally. At Stella Point (18,600 feet), take a short break and watch the sunrise if weather cooperates. Then hike about an hour more to reach Uhuru Peak, the actual summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point on the African continent. After that, you'll turn around and descend, stopping at Barafu for lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp in the upper forest section. Wear gaiters and use trekking poles on the way down to manage the loose terrain. Have your final mountain dinner and enjoy well-deserved rest.

- Day 7
Mweka Camp to Moshi
Have breakfast, then complete your final descent through rainforest heading toward Mweka Park Gate. The lower elevations can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and poles will help you stay safe on the descent. At the gate, you'll receive your summit certificate. From there, it's another hour to Mweka Village where a vehicle waits to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi. Your seven-day Kilimanjaro trek comes to an end.
