Teslin River to Hootalinqua to Carmacks

Over the next seven days you'll paddle roughly 350km down the Teslin River through mostly gentle current with some faster sections and riffles (all under class II difficulty). You'll camp on gravel bars and in wooded clearings, swim, cast a line, and cook meals over the fire. Your guide might take you on short walks into the hills to look for berries or to catch views from higher ground. Along the way you'll pass Hootalinqua, an abandoned trading post where the S.S. Evelyn steamship sits. Later you'll continue onto the Yukon River itself, seeing old paddlewheel remains, trappers' cabins, mines, and trading posts. By week's end you'll reach Carmacks and stay at a campground with showers, hot water, and electricity.

Leave your canoes behind and drive north on the Klondike Highway, taking in views of Five Finger Rapids and high sandy bluffs. You're heading to Tombstone Territorial Park, which sits 285km south of the Arctic Circle and protects the striking Ogilvie Mountains. The Dempster Highway runs through here, a 730km gravel road that ranks as one of the northernmost highways around, stretching all the way to Inuvik and the arctic coast. You'll settle in at a campground just off the highway for the night.

Spend this day hiking through this remote region. The park gets its name from the dark, steep peaks that stand out across the landscape. Hundreds of kilometres north, the tundra opens up and holds one of the North's largest free-ranging caribou herds. Your guide picks the best trails based on weather, your group's interests, and fitness level. Another evening by the campfire follows once you're back at camp.

After breakfast, pack up camp and head south to Dawson City, the gold rush capital. This place exploded overnight during the 1898 stampede and was once the largest city west of Winnipeg and north of Seattle. Many of the false-fronted, gaudily painted buildings from that era are still standing and restored. The day opens up for exploring historic sites and museums around town. Stop by Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall and drive up to Midnight Dome for views across the town.
