Best places to start your Canada Alaska tour
Vancouver turns out to be the most popular jumping-off point with 15 different departure options, while Calgary follows with 10 tour starts. Anchorage, Toronto and also Victoria round out the main gateway cities. Our booking data shows you should lock in your plans about 78 days ahead - that's roughly 2.5 months before you want to travel. The tours often stop in places like Banff, Victoria and also Dawson City, where you can get a real feel for local culture through food and historic sites. The food gets lots of positive feedback, especially on tours that include meals in the package. May and September are smart times to visit - you'll deal with fewer crowds and often get better prices, plus there's a chance to catch the Northern Lights in September. We've found people really like how the tours mix comfortable lodging with outdoor experiences. The Rocky Mountaineer train journey is a particular favorite - travelers love those glass-dome cars that let you see everything as you roll through the wilderness.

- Spring 2026
Spring really comes alive in the Canadian Rockies and Alaska with three excellent cruise combinations plus two land-only options that our clients love. The Rocky Mountaineer train portions work beautifully this time of year - those glass-dome cars give you perfect views of snow-capped peaks while valley floors start showing their first green. Before heading up the Inside Passage, where you might spot whales making their way back to Alaska, cruise-combo tours let you explore Vancouver properly. The land tours focus on Banff National Park just as hiking trails open and wildlife emerges. There's this neat option with private morning access to First Nations cultural centers - our travelers really appreciate learning about indigenous traditions over breakfast before the general public arrives. A few tours add stops in Kelowna's Okanagan Valley for wine tasting, which our customers say nicely balances out all the mountain experiences.

- Summer 2026
Long summer days make these northern regions perfect for spotting wildlife and exploring. Most people go for tours mixing land exploration with Alaska cruises - you'll see massive chunks of ice break off in Glacier Bay and brown bears catching fish along the coast. The Columbia Icefield Ice Explorer trip comes up again and again in our customer feedback; they love actually walking on ancient glacier ice. Summer stays at Fairmont hotels give you ideal bases for hiking and wildlife watching. We've got this one tour with a wagon ride to a BBQ dinner along the Bow River that our clients say captures real western Canadian culture. When you're traveling through Jasper and Banff parks, keep your camera ready - elk, bighorn sheep and sometimes grizzlies show up right beside the coach.

How do land tours and Alaska cruises work together?
You'll find most people start with exploring the Canadian Rockies seeing amazing places like Banff and Lake Louise before hopping on their Inside Passage cruise from Vancouver. If you prefer you can do it the other way around - cruise first then explore the Rockies and finish up in Victoria. Want to see even more? Tours like "Heart of the Canadian Rockies with Alaska Cruise" let you experience both the Rockies and interior Alaska and you can add on spectacular train journeys on the Rocky Mountaineer or Alaska Railroad.
What cultural experiences can you join in Canada and Alaska?
There's some incredible First Nations culture you can experience firsthand at cultural centers and traditional villages. In Whistler you've got to try the authentic Squamish Lil'wat traditions they share a special presentation and breakfast at their Cultural Centre. Love a bit of history? Head to Dawson City Yukon where you can catch a fun can-can show at Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall it's actually featured in tours like the "Ultimate Alaska & the Yukon". Over in Fairbanks Alaska you can learn about Athabascan Native culture at the recreated Chena Indian Village part of the "Alaska & Yukon Explorer" experience.
What are the main natural areas to visit and how do you get there?
Denali National Park in Alaska is a must-see you can get there on the Alaska Railroad or park shuttles it's perfect for seeing wildlife in pristine wilderness. Then there's Kluane National Park in Yukon reached by some gorgeous scenic drives where you'll find Canada's highest peak Mount Logan and massive ice fields. If you're near Seward Alaska don't miss Kenai Fjords National Park best seen by boat tours where you can check out tidewater glaciers and marine life it's a highlight of the "Alaska & Yukon Explorer" tour.
What's the best way to get around Canada and Alaska?
In cities like Vancouver and Victoria you've got easy public transport with buses and ferries. Between cities coach buses are great taking scenic routes through the Rockies and Alaska popular with tours like "The Canadian Rockies with Alaska Cruise". Want something special? Try the Rocky Mountaineer or Alaska Railroad featured in tours like "Spirit of the Rockies" they're absolutely spectacular ways to see the landscape. For those remote spots particularly in Alaska floatplanes are your best bet.
What about those hidden routes travelers love?
The Top of the World Highway between Dawson City Yukon and Fairbanks Alaska takes you through some incredible remote tundra landscapes. People really love this route when they want to get off the tourist trail it's pretty isolated but absolutely beautiful. The Denali Highway is another gem running along Denali National Park's border perfect for hiking and exploring real Alaskan wilderness. One of our travelers Maakere from New Zealand had an amazing time seeing black and grizzly bears from their minivan on Ruby Range Tours' "Alaska & Yukon Explorer" they loved Denali National Park and mentioned how nice it was staying in comfortable hotels along the way.
