What kind of accommodations can I expect on bike tours?

You'll stay in a mix of places, from regular hotels to local homes that give you a real feel for the area. In Kerala, you'll spend 8 nights in hotels and 4 nights in family homestays. Over in Jordan, you get to sleep in Bedouin camps under the desert stars. The Spain trip puts you in nice 3-star hotels, while in Japan you'll experience traditional ryokans. One traveler who stayed at La Maison Hotel in Petra told us: "The rooms were clean and comfortable with great views over the ancient city."

When's the best time to take a bike tour?

It really depends on where you're going. Kerala is best between October and March when you'll miss the monsoons. For Jordan, pick spring or fall to avoid the summer heat. Travelers love cycling Vietnam's Mekong Delta from November to April when it's dry and around 77°F (25°C). In southern Spain's Murcia region, you can ride pretty much any time - they get over 320 sunny days a year, but spring and fall feel just right for cycling.

What's included in bike tour meal plans?

Every tour handles meals differently, but you'll usually get breakfast and some lunches and dinners that let you try local foods. Take Jordan - you get 8 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 1 dinner. In Kerala, it's 13 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners. One Vietnam traveler told us: "The food was incredible - we enjoyed traditional home-cooked meals at local homestays and learned about regional specialties from our guide." Tours typically include water and snacks for your rides.

How many miles do you ride each day?

Daily distances change depending on the tour and how challenging it is. Easy rides like Vietnam's Mekong Delta cover 18-25 miles (30-40km) on flat ground. Medium-level tours like Jordan do 25-37 miles (40-60km) with some hills. Kerala riders usually do about 25 miles (40km) a day with rest days built in. Japan gets more intense with some 43-50 mile (70-80km) days. Don't worry though - you can always hop in the support van if you need a break.

How fit do I need to be for a bike tour?

It varies by tour. The Dalmatian Coast has some steep hills (up to 17% grade) and you'll ride 19-28 miles (30-45km) daily. The Canal du Midi is much easier with mostly flat paths. Try to get comfortable riding 12-19 miles (20-30km) before your trip. As one rider said: "Some of the hills were quite challenging in the heat, but our guide made frequent stops and the support vehicle was always available."

What kind of bikes do you use on tours?

You'll get a good hybrid bike with 21-24 gears that's right for the terrain. The bikes are checked regularly to keep them in good shape. If you want an electric bike, most tours offer them for about $199-250 extra. The Dalmatian Coast bikes come with water bottle holders and optional bags. One guest at Hotel Borik in Lumbarda said: "The bikes were well-maintained hybrids perfect for both paved roads and light gravel sections."
