Reviews of Small Group tours to Uzbekistan
- Uzbekistan 8 Day Cultural Tour (3 Star Hotel Option)
When I decided to visit Uzbekistan, I was initially considering whether I should do it with the International Tour Companies with whom I had prior experience with or Steppe Journeys. After some correspondence with Steppe Journeys, I decided to take a quantum leap and give them a chance. I wasn't disappointed with my choice. Whilst the way the tour is carried out is somewhat unique given that there isn't a Tour Leader following you from one city to another, the instructions were relatively easy to follow. On Day 1, you will receive all your intercity train tickets and you will be met by the local guides on arrival at each city. The local guides are all licensed but shout out to the guide at Samarkand as he was the most outstanding out of the 4! All the Hotels selected were excellent and sufficiently central with dining options nearby. Whilst there was some confusion in the airport pickup and transfer on the first and last day, Odil from Steppe Journeys was responsive and resolved the issue once I called him. Just for your information, if you are arriving in Tashkent in Business Class, your exit point will be different from those arriving in Economy Class. Hence, this piece of information might be crucial so as to avoid any initial confusion in pick up points. All in all, a great tour and I would happily recommend Steppe Journeys if you are intending to visit Uzbekistan. Give the local boys a chance!
- Uzbekistan 7 Day Cultural Tour (from Tashkent to Bukhara, Samarkand, and back to Tashkent)
Very well organized, qualified guides, nice hotels, couldn’t wish for more! The visited places were stunning and perfectly chosen! Can only recommend!
- The Silk Road of Uzbekistan
This was my first Explore! Trip and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic! Our guide Shukhrat was amazing! An absolutely brilliant tour leader! He explained everything from the places we were visiting to also multiple options for our free time. If you get Shukhrat on your tour you are very luck and guaranteed to have a fantastic time. The accomptations are lovely I think the best is probably the home stay in Bukhara simply because you get more of a feel of how people live in the area. Also the house is beyond beautiful! The room you have breakfast in is stunning! I do have to say the WiFi is not the best in all the locations you stay however I wasn’t bothered as I was on holiday and it was nice to disconnect. We had a brilliant bus driver, who although did not speak much English was always happy and smiling when we got on and off the bus! The bus was also very clean and well kept. The food in Uzbekistan can be good. I really liked the ‘Manti / Manty’ dish. However a lot of the food is cooked in a lot of oil so it is very greasy just as a warning. However you will not find better bread anywhere! The bread was and is fantastic! We did have some vegetarians on the trip and although being verigartian is not really done in Uzbekistan they still had some lovely meals. Overall I am very glad I went on this trip and I had a brilliant time! If you decide to go I am sure you will too!
What our customers ask about Uzbekistan Small Group Tours
What is the typical group size for small group tours in Uzbekistan?
Small group tours in Uzbekistan typically host 8-12 travelers allowing easy access to sites like Registan Square in Samarkand. The limited size means guests at places like the Asia Luxury Hotel in Tashkent get more individual attention from local guides. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The tour group size was just right. We had excellent access to all sites and our guide could really focus on everyone's interests."
What type of accommodation is provided on small group tours?
Accommodations range from boutique properties to family-run guesthouses. Travelers can expect stays at places like the Orient Star Hotel in Khiva's old city or traditional yurt camps in the Kyzylkum Desert. Local character defines these choices rather than chain hotel amenities. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The boutique hotels were perfectly located within walking distance to main sites and offered a much more intimate experience than large chain hotels."
How does transportation work on small group tours in Uzbekistan?
Transportation combines air-conditioned minibuses with high-speed Afrosiyob trains connecting major cities like Tashkent and Samarkand. The smaller vehicles can navigate narrow streets in places like Khiva's old town where larger buses cannot go. Premium properties like the Jipek Joli Hotel in Nukus provide private transfers for added convenience.
How much interaction is there with local communities on small group tours?
Daily activities bring travelers into direct contact with local life through artisan workshops in Gijduvan cooking classes in Bukhara and village homestays. Market visits with guides and meetings with craftspeople at places like the Silk Carpet Workshop in Samarkand create natural opportunities for cultural exchange. As one TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The small group size made it easy to have genuine interactions with local people - we weren't an overwhelming presence."
What unique experiences are available on small group tours in Uzbekistan?
The smaller format allows access to private demonstrations at places like the Gijduvan Ceramics School family dinners in Bukhara and special entry to historic sites like the Ulugbek Observatory. Groups can take their time at the Savitskiy Art Museum or join traditional bread-making sessions. A TourRadar traveler noted "having a smaller group allowed us to visit local families and experience authentic Uzbek hospitality."
How does dining work on small group Uzbekistan tours?
Daily breakfast comes standard at hotels like the Asia Bukhara while lunches and dinners mix restaurant meals with home-cooking experiences. Groups can eat at local spots like Akbar House in Bukhara or join cooking classes in family homes. One TourRadar traveler shared: "The small group size meant we could dine at authentic local restaurants and even join families for home-cooked meals - these were trip highlights."
What is the ideal time commitment for a small group tour of Uzbekistan?
Most tours run 8-12 days covering key destinations like Tashkent Samarkand Bukhara and Khiva. This timeline lets travelers explore sites while staying at local properties like the Malika Hotel in Samarkand. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Our 10-day small group tour was perfect - enough time to see the highlights without feeling rushed with free time to explore independently."
