Written on August 27th, 2025I went on the Central Asia combined Sile Road tour with Steppe Journeys in Sep 2024. Steppe Journeys is one of the few tour operators that go to all five Stans.…Read moreSteppe Journeys commented on this reviewDear Jinny Pohl Thank you very much for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review of your Central Asia Combined Silk Road Tour with us. We are truly delighted to hear that you enjoyed the overall organization of the trip, the comfort of the hotels and transport, and especially the professionalism of Ilya in Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan and Ahmed in Tajikistan. We will make sure to pass along your kind words to them. We sincerely regret that your experience with the guides in Uzbekistan did not meet expectations. Your feedback is very important, and we take it seriously. We are already reviewing our guide assignments and training to ensure more consistency and clearer communication for future tours. Your practical suggestions about creating WhatsApp group chats, sharing local guide/agent contacts, and providing clearer instructions for border crossings are excellent. We are grateful for these insights and will work on implementing them to make the experience smoother for our guests. We usually give some freedom to travelers providing only guides during city tours because Uzbekistan is more flexible and easier for foreigners. But of course we will consider your practical and useful idea to provide one guide for the whole part of Uzbekistan too. On behalf of Steppe Journeys, I want to thank you again for trusting us with your travels and for recognizing the effort of our team. We hope to welcome you back to Central Asia in the future and show you the improvements we are making. Warm regards, Odil Akhmedov Steppe Journeys- WB

Written on August 15th, 2025I was surprised at how well organised this tour was, I didn’t really know what to expect as I didn’t hear much from them after we’d paid the money. I was expect…Read moreSteppe Journeys commented on this reviewDear Wendy Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback and for joining our tour. We’re very pleased to hear that you found the tour well organised, enjoyed the comfort of the accommodations, and felt safe and well looked after by our wonderful guide, Chynara, and our driver. We will be sure to pass on your kind words to them — they will be delighted to know their efforts were appreciated. We also appreciate your constructive comments regarding the yurt stay and the museum scheduling in Almaty. We apologise for not advising you in advance about the colder night temperatures in the mountains and will make sure future travellers receive clearer guidance on what to expect and how to prepare. Regarding the museum closure, you are right — we should have checked the schedule more carefully. We’re glad Chynara was able to assist and arrange reimbursement, but we will update our planning to ensure this does not happen again. Your observations help us to continually improve our service, and we hope to welcome you back to explore more of Central Asia in the future. Kind regards, Odil Steppe Journeys David

The only thing I would change is the time spent in Bukhara felt e…Read moreSteppe Journeys commented on this reviewDear Dipendra Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback and for joining us on this journey through Central Asia. We’re delighted to hear that you had an excellent trip overall and that you enjoyed the sights and especially appreciated our guides — Nurisa, Amin, Utkir, and Nur-Mohamad. We’re particularly pleased to know that Nur-Mohamad stood out and left such a strong impression — we will be sure to pass on your kind words to him and the rest of the team. Your suggestions are very valuable to us. We understand your point about the time balance between Bukhara and Almaty, as well as your thoughts on the Issyk-Kul segment. You’re absolutely right — a brief stop or activity at the lake would enhance the experience, and we will look into incorporating that in future itineraries to make better use of the time and add more depth to that portion of the tour. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your insights — they help us improve and continue delivering memorable journeys. We hope to welcome you again on another adventure soon. Warm regards, Odil Steppe Journeys - AM

Questions & Answers
Is there a dress code?
In general you can dress how you wish as if you were in your home country. However when entering open mosques during sightseeing it is recommended for women to cover their heads with light scarf and wear shorts that are longer than knee length.
Is WIFI available?
WIFI is usually available in all hotels however sometimes there can be an additional charge for this, you also have the option of using the internet at a local cafe.
What is the voltage so I can charge my devices?
Voltage throughout the region is 220-250V. You will find in most of the hotels there are European-style sockets with 2 round pins. You may wish to take an adaptor if yours is different.
Are you able to drink the tap water?
It is recommended to always drink bottled water rather than tap water, bottled water will be readily available for you.
What is the local language?
Generally through Central Asia, Russian is the 'second language' and people in the service and tourism sectors often speak English and a range of other European languages. Official languages are: Uzbekistan = Uzbek, Kazakhstan = Kazakh, Kyrgyzstan = Kyrgyz , Turkmenistan = Turkmen. These all belong to the Turkish language group.

Merchants will generally prefer you to pay in cash however in any high standard hotels you will be able to pay via Mastercard or Visa without any issues.
Are we able to change money and what is the local currency?
Only four currencies are convertible in Central Asia which are; US dollar, Euro, UK pounds and Japanese yen. There are exchange offices located at airports on arrival, hotels and local banks to change any money you wish. Uzbekistan's currency is 'soum', Kazakhstan 'tenge', Kyrgyzstan 'sum', Tajikistan 'somoni' and Turkmenistan 'manat'.
What is the weather like in central Asia?
You will find that Uzbekistan has a strictly continental climate: summer is hot and winter is cold. The best time to travel in that area is spring, summer or autumn; if you like dry cold with a snowy winter then it is best to visit in winter as it can be very beautiful also at that time.
