What people love about Camping Tours in Machu Picchu
- Classic Inca Trail Trek 4D/3N to Machu Picchu (Group service )
Hiking the Inca Trail is an amazing experience that I will never forget. Everyone at Alpaca Expeditions was very professional and a joy to be around. The food was AMAZING, and the camping accommodations far surpassed my expectations. The company also promoted their activities in giving back to employees and local communities in the areas we were hiking, so we felt good about supporting this company. Please remember to bring adequate cash for tipping the porters and cooks. They work so hard carrying heavy packs and hiking ahead of the tourist group to make sure everything is set up in advance. I cannot imagine how hard it is to do their job, and a large portion of their livelihood is dependent on tipping, so please consider that before you go. There is also an opportunity to tip guides at the end of the trip. One thing I learned from this experience is to educate yourself on the ethical and legal issues for the porters before you go to make sure that you are participating in ethical tourism. Local laws may not protect people such as the porters to the extent that you are comfortable with, balancing that with supporting their livelihood is something to mull over.
- Salkantay Trek Standard 5D/4N
Veronica did a wonderful job to keep our trek interesting. The size of our group was larger than I would have liked at 15 persons but all and all it went well
- The Inca Trail Experience 8D7N
We used Alpaca expeditions in January 2020 to do the classic Inca Trail, and it was nothing short of phenomenal. The guides were knowledgeable, helpful and kind. The pace set for the walking days were manageable, and the food was the best we had in South America. Being gluten free, I was provided full meals and snacks at every opportunity, including gluten free cookies at tea time and a (freshly baked) gluten free cake on the last day. Would highly recommend them to anyone looking to do the Inca Trail.
What our customers ask about Camping Tours & Trips in Machu Picchu
What are the typical camping locations on a Machu Picchu trek?
The Classic Inca Trail features several well-established camping spots at different elevations. Trekkers spend nights at Ayapata at 3300m Chaquicocha at 3600m and Wiñay Wayna at 2650m. Those choosing the Salkantay route camp at locations like Soraypampa and Chaullay. A TourRadar traveler notes: "Each campsite was strategically chosen with incredible views of the mountains and stars. The Wiñay Wayna site was particularly special as it's the closest camp to Machu Picchu."
When is the best time for a camping trek to Machu Picchu?
The dry season from May to October offers the most reliable weather conditions for Machu Picchu treks. TourRadar travelers report excellent conditions in May with clear mountain views. Higher campsites such as Llulluchapampa at 3750m can experience below-freezing temperatures at night. April/May and September/October bring pleasant hiking weather and fewer tourists on the Inca Trail making these months particularly appealing for trekkers.
How many porters and support staff assist on camping treks?
Each trek comes with a dedicated team of local professionals. TreXperience reviews highlight a typical setup: "For our group of 7 we had 2 guides a chef team of 2 and 6 porters carrying equipment between camps." Companies like World Expeditions maintain a ratio of one porter for every 2-3 clients. These porters handle tents food cooking equipment and up to 7kg of personal belongings per trekker.
What is the camping experience like during a trek to Machu Picchu?
Trekkers sleep in spacious 4-person tents shared between two people at high-altitude locations like Soraypampa at 12830 feet and Phuyupatamarca. A TourRadar traveler shares: "The campsites were in spectacular locations... camping next to Salkantay glacier with 360-degree views was simply magnificent". Camp staff handle all setup and breakdown while preparing hot meals in dedicated dining tents with proper toilet facilities available.
How physically demanding are camping treks to Machu Picchu?
These treks require good physical fitness with daily walks lasting 6-8 hours. The Salkantay Trek reaches elevations of 4630m while the Classic Inca Trail tops out at Dead Woman's Pass (4215m). Routes from Soraypampa to Salkantay Pass include considerable elevation changes. According to a TourRadar traveler: "The trek was challenging but totally manageable with proper acclimatization and a moderate fitness level. Our guides paced us perfectly."
How far in advance should I book a camping trek to Machu Picchu?
The Classic Inca Trail requires booking at least 6 months ahead due to strict permit limits. ILE Tours advises: "Inca Trail permits for the peak season of June-August often sell out 6-8 months ahead." The Salkantay Trek offers more booking flexibility but early planning ensures better guide and equipment selection. For prime hiking dates during Cusco's June/July festival season plan up to a year in advance.
