- Sydney· March 7th, 2025Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I would definitely consider taking Social Cycles again. However, there were a few areas that could be improved. On multiple occasions, there was confusion about whether meals were included or if we were expected to pay. We would refer to the itinerary, which often indicated that we were responsible for the meal, only for it to be covered later. As a result, some of us chose not to eat because we weren't hungry and didn’t want to pay, but would have happily eaten had we known it was included. This inconsistency became a bit frustrating. Additionally, there was an issue with water bottles that had been previously used by others in our group. These bottles were simply refilled and redistributed for reuse. While I fully support reducing plastic waste through the reuse of bottles, I do not feel comfortable using a bottle that someone I just met a few days ago has had their mouth on. A possible solution could be to mark each bottle with the individual's name and ensure it is returned to the same person each time, or alternatively, provide dedicated refill bottles for hydration that are not directly shared among participants. Lastly, we were informed that snacks and drinks were not included with Social Cycles, yet our local guides were required to cover the costs out of pocket if we wanted additional refreshments during the ride. In my experience with other bike tours, snacks and drinks, including sodas, were always provided alongside water. It seems unfair to expect the local guides to bear these costs, especially when we are paying for services that typically include such provisions. These are all areas that could be adjusted for future improvement. Overall, the itinerary was exceptional. Meeting with the local NGOs was a highlight, and I wouldn’t change that experience for anything. Our guides were outstanding—knowledgeable, supportive, and truly helpful. Experiencing Laos from the back of a bike was unforgettable and offered a unique perspective of the country.Show moreSocial Cycles commented on this reviewHi Sydney, I'm so pleased you really enjoyed the Social Cycles ride overall and I appreciate the opportunity to rectify some of the details you mentioned above. I'll speak to the guides and local team about them. The Lao people are very generous,... Show moreTrip date: February 2025
- Jure· January 4th, 2025The tour from Vientiane to Hanoi was unexceptional. I expected riding in Laos to be more quaint and peaceful, but it mostly takes place on dusty, pothole-ridden highways shared with large trucks. Van transports are lengthy and very uncomfortable. Roads in Vietnam are better. Destinations are mostly tourist attractions and the social aspect minimal. Website description is outdated. The most troublesome to me is SC’s business model. They don’t operate teams on the ground, but rather subcontract from another western-owned outfit. As a result, very little profit is shared with local guides. Please consider this before embarking on this tour. There are better ways to see these fascinating countries and meet their kind and beautiful people.Show moreTrip date: January 2025
- KCKalle· November 24th, 2024Good group, but the issue of meeting the NGOs was pretty much just in the background. For us in the group it was ok , because we liked to cycle. Che the guide is a good one, but he is not really into the idea of your company. But as I understand it was the first tour for you for himShow moreTrip date: November 2024
- CHChristoph· November 15th, 2024Wonderful and exiting tour. We hat not the slightest problem. Very happy with the guide, who shared with us so many insights to the live in Laos.Show moreTrip date: October 2024
- BCBen· February 17th, 2024Fantastic itinerary, lots packed in. Great scenery, cycling, historic sights, food and hotels. Very dedicated local team. I particularly enjoyed the optional mountain hike and hot air balloon ride. Team went out of their way to assist with my extension to Vietnam after the trip had ended. Some slightly long driving legs between the cycling on very poor roads.Show moreTrip date: February 2024
- EEdAdsheadGrant· November 6th, 2022What a superb, insightful, humbling and impressionable trip. Tom P in Laos was first class, cycling with us and co-ordinating everything locally for us with the help of a Laos guide and Laos driver. No request was too much and the agility around 9 days over 365kms of cycling was excellent. He knows the country really well and was able to explain plenty around the various NGOs we visited, how the country operates and lots of info around the wonderful countryside we cycled. Accommodation was a good mix of local and higher grade hotels in the Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Temperatures in Oct/Nov hit 32 and 33 degrees so stay hydrated and the sweeper van was always there to help if we ran out of puff.Show moreTrip date: November 2022
- Paul· November 3rd, 2022Exceeded my expectations. Well organised, a mixture of cycling to suit a rider at any level. The combination of Organised trips and ad hoc stops to have a swim or seem something off the beaten track really added to the overall experience.Show moreSocial Cycles commented on this reviewHey Paul, so pleased to have you with us again! - AOAlan· February 1st, 2018This Laos tour was my 3rd trip with Social Cycles.Based on previous trips i expected and got another excellent tour. An inaugural event so there were unknowns as far as attractions, accommodation, terrain etc. The tour went into pretty hilly remote areas. It wasn't going to be easy. One needs to be fairly fit. Accommodation, Certainly not 5 star but sufficient with good beds. Food was great and plentiful. Can't wait for tour no 4. Backup driver Toh was brilliant. Luang Prabang is a lovely city & a great place to start a venture like this. Try to get there a couple of days earlier to enjoy Elephant riding and Kouang Si waterfall. Note; it can be cold. Thanks Brett.Show moreTrip date: January 2018

Asked on December 11th, 2024I am a solo traveller who would like to do an active trip /cycling and hiking) through Laos. Could you help me put together a trip or do you only organise for groups?
- Social CyclesOperator•Written December 2024
We don't really have a self guided option for Laos. You really need a support can to get you through some of the more challenging terrain, depending on how much time you have. There's also a safety element with roads we'd prefer not to cycle due to the volume of traffic or the condition of the road. We can do private tours for two people, which we can tailor to what you're looking for.

Asked on December 3rd, 2024I will consider this. I am just arrived in Vietnam and getting settled. What is the latest I can confirm my attendance?

Traveler•Written November 2024I'd love to join you on February 20, however I will just be finishing a bicycle trip in Cambodia on February 19. Unfortunately that would be cutting it a bit tight.
- Social CyclesOperator•Written December 2024
The tour starts in Luang Prabang on the 20th (evening), but we also spend the night of the 21st in LP. If you change your mind and think you might be able to get a connecting flight from Cambodia to LPQ, then let me know and we can accommodate you.
- Social CyclesOperator•Written December 2024
If you could let me know about Luang Prabang to Hanoi in February by early January, then that should be fine. Get yourself settled and grab yourself a Vietnamese iced coffee.

Traveler•Written December 2024I had some time read the brochure. I will be visiting some of the areas mentioned in the brochure already. I do not believe this tour is for me. My goal was to see more of Laos after just spending 6 weeks in Vietnam.

Asked on April 2nd, 2024Would it be possible to operate this on a private basis and if so, is there an added cost?
- Social CyclesOperator•Written April 2024
I can hold 6 places for a week until the clients confirm, without a deposit. I can also run this as a private tour at no additional cost.

Traveler•Written April 2024Our preferred option is that all 6 of us would undertake this as a private tour over 11 days in the window 8th November to 4th December. If this is not possible, at least 4 of us would book for the scheduled tour leaving 11th November.
- Social CyclesOperator•Written April 2024
I'd like to confirm that we can run this as a private trip for 6 people in November. We don't have any other bookings for this ride, so we will close the bookings as soon as the 6 people are confirmed.

Traveler•Written February 2022Thanks for response. Was hoping to find tour date earlier in 2023... maybe first quarter Also a bit concerned about hills/elevation climb of trip
- Social CyclesOperator•Written February 2022
We're pencilling in Jan 16th and February 13th for 2023. How does that sound? We'll probably do one in March, then that will be it until about October. It can be a little challenging, but there's always a support van around to give you a ride. Alternatively, we also have rides in Cambodia which is completely flat.

Traveler•Written February 2022I've ridden Cambodia before and would like to see Laos. February or March sounds like a possibility. I am 65 y.o reasonable fit so I guess my quess my question would be have you had people my age on the ride persons before?
- Social CyclesOperator•Written February 2022
The majority of our riders are in their 50's, 60's and even 70's. We even had one lady who cycled Vietnam/Laos with us who was 82! And she cycled Iran with us twice! I've no doubt you'll manage the ride and feel right at home with the group.
