Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Moshi

You'll get picked up from Kilimanjaro Airport, or from Nairobi or Arusha if that works better for you, and head to your bed and breakfast in Moshi. Once you're settled in, there's a pre-trek briefing where your guides go through what to expect, and you'll check all your gear to make sure everything's ready for the climb ahead.

    Included Activities

    • Pre-trek briefing
    • Equipment check
    Landmarks/POIs
    Kilimanjaro Airport
  2. Day 2

    Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast, you drive 45 minutes to Machame Gate where the guides and porters get all the equipment organized. The trek itself starts through thick forest, the kind that actually supplies most of Kilimanjaro's water. You'll break for lunch at Halfway Clearing, then keep climbing to reach camp near Machame Hut ruins at 3,000m/9,843 ft, where you might catch views of Kibo's snowy dome.

    Meals

    Mount Kilimanjaro
    Kibo
  3. Day 3

    Machame Camp to Shira Plateau

This is a shorter day but it kicks off with a steep push up to Picnic Rock, a curved cliff face that gives you great sightlines of Kibo and the jagged edge of Shira Plateau. From there the trail eases up as it crosses the plateau to your camp near Shira Hut at 3,840m/12,598 ft, which has nice views of Kibo, the rock formations around you, and Mt. Meru sitting above the clouds.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Climb to Picnic Rock with rest point
    • Trek to Shira Plateau and Shira Hut camp
    Landmarks/POIs

  4. Day 4

    Shira Plateau to Barranco Valley

You'll start with a gentle climb across moorland with wide views all around, then walk on lava ridges underneath Kibo's glaciers. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction, you head down into the Great Barranco Valley at 3,900m/12,795 ft. The valley's protected by huge cliffs, and from there you can see out across the plains below.

  5. Day 5

    Barranco Valley to Karanga Camp

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall comes first, then you're on an uneven trail on Kibo's south-eastern side with really good views of the southern ice fields. The ground shifts from rock to loose scree with some vegetation mixed in. You reach Karanga Camp at 4,100m/13,451 ft for lunch in a narrow valley, and this is your last water stop before Barafu.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Lunch at Karanga), Dinner

  6. Day 6

    Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

You start with a short but steep climb out of Karanga, then settle into an easier path on compacted scree that opens up with wide views. The climb to Barafu campsite at 4,600m/15,092 ft is steady. Spend the rest of the day resting and getting ready for tomorrow's summit push, then get an early night since you're heading up around 1 a.m.

You'll start your summit push by torchlight around 1 a.m., going up loose volcanic scree on well-graded zig-zags to hit Stella Point at 5,735m/18,814 ft by sunrise. Rest there and take in the sunrise over Mawenzi. If you're feeling strong, you can do the two-hour round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,896m/19,341 ft, where you'll pass glaciers and ice cliffs. The descent back to Barafu is quick, then you head further down to camp at the edge of Mweka Forest.

After going on an amazing safari with Absolute Africa in 2015, I booked the Kilimanjaro trek in/for October 2020 with Absolute Africa again. It was a wonderful experience which I can highly recommend!! The booking process, pre-departure organization and the briefing with Samson in Moshi for my 8-day-Lemosho trek were brilliant. I went with a team of 7 locals (5 porters, 1 cook and my guide William). The team is doing an outstanding job! They do everything to make you feel comfortable and are very warm-hearted people. Absolute Africa hires locals and says that they pay fair wages to the staff which I think is very important. Food was always veeery delicious (thanks Eduardo). William explained a lot about Kilimanjaro, the vegetation & history along the way and checked my oxygen/heart rate every day. For the summit night he gave me all the mental support I needed, so I fulfilled my dream and reached the summit and the roof of Africa. Due to Corona, there are just very few climbers at the moment (which was good for me but very bad for the local tourist industry). Again, I can highly recommend Absolute Africa and climbing Kilimanjaro.

The Kikimanjaro climb was great the dream team from Kili Bound were fantastic and the food was out standing and the whole team were happy and helpful Leonard and Aggray the guides were outstanding. The only down side was that due to the small group i.e only us 3 the tips that were recomended by you were way out and we added 100 bucks each to what was suggested and was still too little but all we had. Also it would have been helpful if we had some small notes in the local currency for tips as the smallest note i had was10 dollar notes and the staff at the hotel did not understand about giving change. Well the 4 day safari was at best 2 days and as an add on i would not recommend it. if you are going to do a safari, go for a dedicated run safari. if the itinerary was clearer i would have booked better return flights as were left waiting around a day in Arusha camp to fly home. At the start of our safari after being picked up from our hotel and then abandand 2 hours later in Arusha and left waiting for 6 hours for the rest of the tour to come from Kenya, then a night in camp and a 7 hour drive to the serengeti the next day 2 days to do what could have been done in 1, then a morning game drive, then in the afternoon a drive to the camp in Ngorongoro crater for a morning game drive and the afternoon driving back to Arusha camp so all in all 2 game drives. if the itinerary was clearer our expectation would not have been so high, on a plus note the staff and drivers were all happy and helpful full marks to the.

Greetings, Anyone interested in challenging themselves with a picturesque climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro should strongly consider contacting Natasja and David at Absolute Africa as they were professional, prompt, friendly and courteous in helping me book my trip with them as well as deal with any issues on which I required their input. Moreover, my team of six, lead by my guide, William, were friendly and always helpful in getting me whatever I needed to make it to the summit, well before sunrise, on July 8th, 2015. It was a fantastic trip, well organized and with plenty of information and food on the mountain! My equipment and the gear provided were fine and again, the service was excellent! I highly recommend the team at Absolute Africa as a reasonably priced operator for trips up the mountain. Thanks to everyone there! Sean

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2016

The prime time to visit the Serengeti in Tanzania is usually regarded as being from late November through to March when the big herds of wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and zebra head on to the southern plains of the Serengeti.

To get the best viewing on the other hand in Kenya's Masai Mara July through to September are usually regarded as the best months.
