From J'Burg all the way to Nairobi was a fantastic journey with Acacia. I have had the best time throughout the 30 days on this overland trip. Pete, the tour guide is awesome and well-organised. Francis, the driver is the super funny and friendly. They've really made the trip to another level. What's more is their cooking, oh my god, we are so spoiled. When I have a chance, I will definitely jump on another overland truck with Acacia.

I found it was a tour of two halves due to a terrible tour guide that took over half way through. He did not make vegetarian options, saying that their is side is not an apporitate meal (e.g salad and a roll where everyone got hot dogs). He did not know his facts e.g the equator is to the east.... or the itinerary e.g we would sit around for an hour and he would be no where in sight and when he came about he would not know what we were waiting for. Also would start yelling at the whole group on three occasions. I go to learn about the area and the culture and I feel that I did not with rimz as such I would recommend g adventures as a reliable company that I have always had quality with.

Not long back from this tour and I had a great time so I thought I'd let others know. Overall, the tour was well organised and the guides ensured we felt safe at all times. The truck was well equipped and I was surprised at how comfortable the seats were - so comfortable I was able to sleep despite the 'African massages' along the way. Despite the fact that some of the journeys were quite long, being able to sleep certainly helped. Some of the journeys on this trip are quite long but they are unavoidable if you want to see these parts of Africa. Anyway, the route was quite scenic and the guides provided info about the surrounding area along the way and we stopped every so often to stretch our legs. The main guide, Sammy, also informed us when to stock up on snacks and drinks at the better supermarkets as a lot of the local shops were poorly supplied as you can imagine. Most of the stops had some form of toilet however my group found that the bush toilets were generally cleaner (this is Africa after all). The tents provided were pretty good and the mattresses were spot on too. I have to say, one of the things I was anxious about before going on the trip was the quality of the meals as catering for large groups often leads to small portions of massively overdone food but both Sam and Ali were great cooks and we always had plenty to eat. We also stopped at local kitchens to try some of the local cuisine for lunch which was another good experience. Our particular group had lots of allergies/food intolerances (seafood, nuts, dairy, gluten and shellfish to name a few) and Sam always provided options for these people - to the extent that one person had to reject his meals so they could use up some of their own food to create some room in their suitcase. Finally, our guide Sammy was excellent along the way and his local knowledge was invaluable for us between helping getting currency changed to recommending where to buy gifts etc. One of the more negative reviews says to do this trip on your own steam which seems like a very romantic idea but without being able to speak the local language (Sam can speak 8 apparently) and knowing how to deal with the corrupt policemen you will only end up wishing you had someone like Sam guiding you. Bad point(s0: When I was at Lake Malawi the lake was quite rough so snorkelling wasn't going to be worthwhile but I guess it's just one of those things and Acacia can't exactly control the weather Highlights of the trip: South Luangwa - we were fortunate to get VERY close to a pair of lions in heat The Serengeti - seeing The Great Wildebeest Migration was spectacular Would recommend.

The itinerary for the African safari planed by Mama Liz made my trip a mesmerizing experience as I was able to enjoy all the beauty of the wild while she cared for all the big and little details that no one is prepared for during a trip like this. She is an amazing, truly caring and knowledgeable tour guide. I have recomended her to other people and would definitely do another trip guided by Mama Liz!

How are the dome tents equipped, e.g., with sleeping bags, mattresses or pads, etc?

The 2-man canvas tents have built in mosquito nets for the window and door and we provide the covered foam sleeping mattress (about 4cm thick). Clients will need to bring their own sleeping bag and pillow.

Is the tour confirmed if I book? Is there a supplement if I am travelling alone? Would I have to share the room/tent? I will have to check some emails from time to time. Is there some moments during the trip when I would be able to access them? Is there some specific documentations or visas I should be aware of?

No there is no single supplement. Accommodation on tour is twin share, providing we have another solo traveller of the same sex for you to share with. If we dont then you will have a tent to yourself. Most campsites have internet access; some offer it free, other campsite make a small charge. Most clients require visa for Zimbabwe, and Tanzania and a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate for Zanzibar but actual requirements depend on your nationality. Currently both Zimbabwe and Tanzanian visas can be obtained on tour. There is a mandatory insurance that all visitors must purchase online for Zanzibar, approximate cost USD 40.

Do you have a rough idea of some optional recommended tours we can undertake during this trip and the approximate costs of these excursions? Do you have food options for vegetarians? Last but not least, does this tour provide typical African safari tour experiences, including seeing almost all wild life sanctuaries and animals like lions, tigers, African elephants, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, panthers, hippo, etc?

Further to my previous trailing message, I also need to know if there is any local payment portion in this tour in addition to CAD 4811 per traveler. I mean, there are no hidden costs (other than the cost of not including or excluding items in the tour like visas, gratuity and not included excursions, and additional stay and lunch), and we will be paying Canadian dollars 9622 for two travelers.

    • Acacia Adventure HolidaysOperatorWritten October 2023

Optional Activities: please see the attached Tour Dossier for additional activity options and approximate costs. Dietary Requirements: we do cater to vegetarians, as we get this request quite often. The Tour Leader will be notified and will do his/her best to provide suitable dishes. Please note that tigers and panthers sadly do not live naturally in Africa.

    • Acacia Adventure HolidaysOperatorWritten October 2023

There is indeed a Local Payment, known as the Adventure Pass. Every adventure tour has an Adventure Pass which is paid to your tour leader in Africa at the beginning of the tour. This is separate and in addition to the Tour Price, and covers selected park entries, activities and excursions along the way where payment goes directly to the supplier to ensure local suppliers benefit directly from the income. The current Adventure Pass is USD 1010.00 / person. This is to be paid in US Dollars cash directly to the Tour Leader.
