    Ohakune

    Your second free day in the Central Plateau. You can optionally join a drive up the mountain road past the old Grand Chateau hotel to Whakapapa Village for views across the western North Island. The 6km Taranaki Falls track is one of the region's best short walks, or continue exploring the volcanic plateau's other activities.

  2. Days 8 - 11

    Waitomo

    A free day in Waitomo with plenty of visitor experiences to choose from. Explore the underground cave systems and glow-worms that made this area famous. You can also try black water rafting, abseiling, ziplining, bushwalking, or visit the Discovery Centre and Museum. Most attractions are walkable from the campsite or offer pick-ups and drop-offs.

    Napier

    A free day in seaside Napier. Take a wine tour around the region, one of New Zealand's premier wine areas, or take a boat tour to Cape Kidnappers gannet colony. Walk or cycle along the pretty seafront on Marine Parade to see the many Art Deco buildings. Explore the old harbour area with its boutique shops and cafes.

    A free day in Whakatane, the heart of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, which frequently records the highest number of annual sunshine hours in New Zealand. It's perfect for unwinding and exploring the area's natural setting. For active travelers, Whakatane is one of New Zealand's premier fishing centres. Take a boat trip to Moutohora/Whale Island, a protected wildlife sanctuary, or a scenic flight over White Island volcano.
