Itinerary
- Day 1
Hobart to Miena
Pickup from Travelodge Hotel Hobart happens before 9 AM, then you'll head north through Bothwell and into the highlands. The drive takes you past Waddamana, where Tasmania's first hydro-electric power station sits, and it's worth seeing how they harnessed water power back then. You'll stop for a picnic lunch somewhere along the route, then continue through the high country toward Miena and Lake Augusta. By early afternoon you'll arrive at Thousand Lakes Lodge, get settled into your room, and freshen up. Before dinner, there's a gentle alpine walk to stretch your legs and get a feel for the landscape. The evening brings a hearty meal in the lodge dining room, and afterward you can relax by the fire while the day winds down.

Central Plateau
This morning focuses on the Central Plateau Conservation Area with its subalpine moorlands, glacial tarns, and exposed ridgelines. You'll choose between guided or self-guided walk options, which include routes to Allisons Hut, Lake Ada, or Ibbott's Hut depending on what appeals to you. Keep an eye out for wombats, quolls, wallabies, and Tasmanian devils moving through the scrub, plus various birdlife overhead. The clear, cold air and open terrain make it feel quite remote. By later afternoon you head back to the lodge for a hearty dinner. After eating, step outside to stargaze beneath Tasmania's Dark Sky Reserve where the night sky is remarkably clear and dark.

Central Plateau
Today offers more exploration of the Central Plateau's rugged terrain with several walk options. You could head to a remote hut, follow the shoreline of a glacier-carved lake, or simply find a quiet spot for reflection and photography. The weather changes frequently here and the scenery shifts with it, so bring a camera if you photograph. Native wildlife tends to be most active early in the morning or as evening approaches, giving you chances to spot species in their natural state. Return to the lodge by late afternoon where you can settle into the lounge, try some local wines, and have another hearty evening meal. Later, head outside to take in the vast night sky that stretches across the plateau.
