Naples
You'll start your trip arriving in Naples, the city that sits beneath Mount Vesuvius and gave the world pizza. The day involves checking out some serious history and scenery. Head to Pompeii and Herculaneum to walk through those ancient ruins that got buried all those centuries ago. After that, the National Archaeological Museum has an extensive collection of Greco-Roman artifacts worth spending time with. Later, walk along the Lungomare seafront where you can see Castel dell'Ovo sitting right there on the waterfront. It's a solid introduction to what this region is all about.

Based in Sorrento today, you're staying in a town that sits high on cliffs overlooking the coast. Wander through the old town's narrow streets and get a feel for the place. Then head down to Marina Grande where the fishing boats are all painted in bright colors. The medieval Cloister of San Francesco is worth walking through if you want some quiet space away from the streets. Before the day ends, stop by the Correale di Terranova Museum to see Neapolitan artwork and get views out over the peninsula. Sorrento's got that relaxed but upscale vibe that makes it a nice base.

Getting there involves a boat ride and then swimming or rowing in, so it's a whole experience. After that, take the chairlift up Mount Solaro, which is the highest point on the island. From up there you get views across the entire region. Later, check out Villa San Michele with its gardens and art collection. The whole island has this mix of rugged cliffs and upscale resort feel.

Spend some time at Spiaggia Grande beach where there are cafes right there so you can grab lunch without going far. If you're up for it, hike the Path of the Gods trail which runs along the coast and gives you those views you see in pictures. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is down at the waterfront with its distinctive dome. Positano is more about soaking in the atmosphere than checking off specific sights.

Then find your way to the Museo della Carta, which is housed in an old paper mill and tells the story of the papermaking tradition here. Later in the day, head to Valle delle Ferriere for a hike through the nature reserve. You'll pass through lemon groves, come across waterfalls, and see remnants of old ruins from the past. Visit the cathedral where Saint Matthew's relics are kept, including the crypt and cloister which have some real character. Head up to Castello di Arechi, which sits on a hilltop and gives you those broad views across the coast. Then down at the waterfront, the Lungomare Trieste promenade is a nice place to walk around, grab dinner, or just watch the water. You've been to the cliffs of Positano, walked through historic Amalfi, taken that boat out to Capri, experienced the quiet sophistication of Sorrento, and felt the bustle of Salerno. Naples itself, where you started, connects all these places together. The coast has a real range to it, from the quieter villages to the bigger cities, and that variety is what makes the region interesting to explore.
