Itinerary
- Day 1
Frankfurt to Muscat
Your journey starts with an evening departure from Frankfurt, heading toward Oman. You'll be traveling overnight, so settle in for the flight and try to rest. Depending on your connections, you'll arrive in Muscat either early morning or later in the evening.
- Day 2
Muscat
After arriving in Muscat, you'll check in and have breakfast if the timing works out. From there, you can explore the city's main sights including the Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos, walk through the Muttrah Souk where you'll find spices and incense, and check out the National Museum to learn about Omani culture. If you're interested, there's an optional sunset dhow cruise available later in the day.

Muscat
This day focuses on Muscat's modern side. You'll start at the Royal Opera House with its white marble exterior, then head to the Oil and Gas Exhibition Center to see how Oman's oil wealth developed. Next, visit the Amouage Visitor Center to learn about frankincense production, and stop by the National Hospitality Institute for lunch with tourism students. In the afternoon, you can optionally visit the planetarium if interested.

Muscat to Al-Sharqiyah to Ras al Jinz
Your two-day adventure begins with a 340 km drive through the Al-Sharqiyah region, traveling along dramatic coastlines with rugged cliffs. You'll stop at Bimmah Sinkhole to see where seawater from the Gulf of Oman mixes with fresh mountain water, then continue to Sur to watch traditional dhow boat building. Later, you'll arrive at Ras al Jinz on the Indian Ocean coast where sea turtles sometimes appear in the evening.

Al-Sharqiyah to Wahiba Sands
You'll see how Omanis adapt to their environment by visiting Wadi Bani Khalid with its permanent water source where locals swim, then contrast that with the Wahiba Sands desert. Meet Bedouin families in their camps and learn about their way of life. After traveling 260 km through varied landscapes, you'll spend the night in a prepared camp in the desert, experiencing the quiet and space of the dunes.

Wahiba Sands to Nizwa
After traveling 355 km, you'll reach Sinaw, Oman's southernmost major oasis and a key Bedouin trading center where you can watch people haggle over camels and goats. Visit the Across Ages Museum to learn about local history, then head to Nizwa to explore its striking 17th-century round fort tower with views across the city. A special dinner is planned for the evening (available on New Year's Eve departures).

Nizwa to Bahla to Al Hamra
You're heading to Bahla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an 11 kilometre city wall, then exploring traditional pottery at the Aladawi pottery factory. Walk through the farming village of Al Hamra and learn about the Falaj irrigation system, an ingenious network of canals that's kept this arid region alive for centuries. You'll also visit the UNESCO-listed irrigation canals of Falaj Daris to understand water conservation. Total travel is 185 km.

Nizwa to Muscat to Salalah
Start early at the weekly Nizwa livestock market where Bedouins and farmers trade camels, donkeys, and sheep. Watch the trading happen with minimal negotiation and observe local customs. After that, you'll leave northern Oman behind and head south to the frankincense region of Dhofar. A domestic flight from Muscat to Salalah covers the 215 km journey.

Salalah
In Salalah, Dhofar's garden city, you'll see camels, aloe vera plants, white beaches, and fishing villages. Pass the imposing Sultan Qaboos Mosque and the Sultan's palace, then explore the souk with its gold and silver goods. Check out roadside fruit and vegetable stalls that show why Salalah is known as Oman's garden. Optionally, you can visit Taqa to see wooden-door houses, watch anchovy-drying operations, explore Khor Rori (an old frankincense port), or see Mirbat where the frankincense trade route began. Total travel is 180 km.

Salalah to Muscat
There's an optional morning visit to the mausoleum of the Prophet Job, revered in Islam and located in Salalah's mountains. Then take the scenic coastal road west where incense trees fill the landscape and you can meet locals who explain frankincense harvesting. Walk through a valley and stop at Mughsail Lagoon to spot migratory birds like occasional flamingos. By evening, you'll fly back to Muscat and then head home to Germany. Total travel is 170 km.
