  2. Day 2

    Quito to San Cristóbal

Head to Quito Airport early with a box breakfast, then fly to San Cristóbal in the Galápagos Islands. Your Galápagos guide meets you after landing for hotel check-in and a briefing. Later you'll explore the town and have lunch at a restaurant. After that, you'll head to La Loba, which sits among mangroves and volcanic rocks where you can snorkel, relax on the beach, or take a short walk along the shore.

You'll return to San Cristóbal for lunch, then head to Playa Ochoa, a white-sand beach with turquoise waters where you can swim, sunbathe, and relax.

You may spot the endangered Chatham mockingbird. In the afternoon, visit the Wall of Tears, a historic site from when Isabela was a penal colony. Between 1946 and 1959, convicts were forced to build this wall from massive lava blocks, and the harsh conditions led to many deaths.

The paved trail to the beach takes 45 minutes to an hour, and you'll see Galápagos finches and lizards along the way. Marine iguanas scatter among black rocks, and turtles can sometimes be spotted, though swimming isn't recommended due to strong currents. In the afternoon, you can visit the Charles Darwin Research Centre or check out the lively fish market.

Overall good, the guide was sweet but lacked passion and enthusiasm, very soft spoken

Guides were excellent, advance planning and some instructions needed updating and/or were inaccurate. Most accommodations quite good, but boxed food not adequate. Worst thing on trip was having to carry boxed lunches and back packs on hike/climb to Machu Picchu, which otherwise was a great but much more difficult than described experience.

The tour group was only 6 and we got on well. A great start. Saw almost everything we wanted to, including a group of Orcas on our personal boat going from Floreana to Isabell. Great snorkelling. So 6 people plus one experienced guide going around the Islands and staying on land every night - compared to being on the same boat with a 100 other people. No contest.
