Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Cologne

You arrive in Cologne and have the whole day before your cruise departs at 18:00. If you came a day early, that's great because it gives you time to walk around and check out the cathedral and other sites without rushing. The city has plenty to see, so you can take things at your own pace and grab lunch somewhere in the old town before heading to the ship.

    Optional Activities

    • Explore Cologne's cathedral city
    • Visit city monuments and attractions
    Landmarks/POIs
    Cologne Cathedral

  2. Day 2

    Rüdesheim

The ship pulls in at Rüdesheim around 11:00, and you've got time to head into town and check out Drosselgasse, the famous street that's basically the heart of Rhine wine country. This is where Brahms worked on his Symphony No. 3, which is kind of cool to know while you're walking around. Try a Rüdesheim coffee, which is their local specialty, and then get back to the ship before it departs at 18:00.

The main thing to see is Speyer Cathedral, one of Germany's most important Romanesque cathedrals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's impressive to walk through, and then you can explore the rest of the old town before the ship leaves at 19:00.

Head up to Münster Sankt Stephan cathedral, which sits high above the Rhine valley and has quite an art collection inside. If you're interested in wine, Geldermann sparkling wine producer is based here too. You'll have until nearly midnight before the ship departs.

Walk through the medieval old town, check out the Gate of Spalen, and if you have time, pop into one of the 27 museums. The city's home to Switzerland's oldest university, so there's definitely character here. You'll have until 19:30 before leaving.

The A-ROSA Rhine river cruise was excellent in many respects - food, staff, cabins, sites, itinerary etc. Unfortunately it was completely let down by terrible data connectivity. The ship's wifi was so weak that it was impossible to load a webpage, check emails etc. Even the staff were frustrated, as it was difficult for them to do their jobs efficiently, making arrangements for shore excursions, assisting with passenger inquiries etc. What it meant for me was that I couldn't log into my Aunt's funeral live stream, nor do a job interview through video conferencing. The excuse provided was that the system kept jumping between the German & French networks on each side of the Rhine. If the A-ROSA wants to attract passengers this needs to be fixed. Easy fix is for A-ROSA to invest in a satellite solution like Starlink.

Dear Alicia, thank you for your feedback. Connection on the river, especially in the border regions, can be tricky because of the different networks. That is why the WIFI is not suitable for streaming services. We hope to offer improved connectivity in... Show more

The entire itinerary and route of our cruise was altered. And we were given absolutely no advance notice of the same. According to A Rosa crew it was unforeseen. That is not believable as they admitted that the cruise prior to ours also had their route altered due to flooding of the Rhine. So they had intimation and should have updated customers and kept them informed before hand. To be told after boarding that every single port is changed was unacceptable and a cheating of clients. We paid a huge amount of money for the cruise and travelled 4000 miles to visit Germany annd the chosen ports, and we were taken to the Netherlands which we have visited multiple times before. Besides being disappointed we feel cheated and are not going to ignore this matter. We will be taking this up with A Rosa. They cannot hide behind force majeur and think that clients can just be treated with such callousness.

A-ROSA offered an excellent service. The staff was really attentive to its clientele and accommodating. The only problem was that the services and entertainment were not always offered in English, as the cruise was mostly attended by German people. For example, we (as non-German speaking guests) had a discount on some shore excursions because they could not be offered in English. They needed a minimum of 20 English speaking people to have tours in English and we could not reach that number. Although the discount was a good compromise, this situation was unfortunate as we missed a lot of information that was given. I would recommend that Tour Radar or A-ROSA tell their clients that this tour is mostly attended by German people so that people who cannot speak German look for a more international cruise ship to avoid that kind of situation.
