Trier
You'll arrive in Trier and have the afternoon and evening to explore at your own pace. The city has layers of history going back 2,000 years, so there's plenty to see. Walk through the old town and check out the Porta Nigra, one of the best-preserved Roman gates north of the Alps. The Trier Cathedral is nearby and worth seeing, with its mix of Roman foundations and medieval additions. By evening, head to a traditional tavern and try some local Riesling wine while you settle in.

The walk takes you across one of the oldest bridges in the region, and you'll pass historic ferry towers that mark the area's past. After that, the trail climbs up through the vineyards that slope down to the river. The higher you go, the better the views get over the entire Moselle valley and the villages below.

There you can explore a restored Roman cellar from the 4th century that gives real insight into how wine was stored and aged back then. If you want to add time, there's an option to detour to Bernkastel-Kues, where the market square is lined with half-timbered houses and has that classic medieval feel. From there, you'll continue to Zeltingen to see the baroque architecture throughout the town.

The real highlight here is seeing Marienburg Castle sitting high on the ridge above town. It's been there for almost 900 years, so it's a pretty solid piece of history overlooking everything.
