Itinerary
- Day 1
Fez to Chefchaouen
Your hotel pickup in Fez kicks things off this morning, and then you're heading west toward Chefchaouen. You can take the highway or opt for the scenic route that passes the Oulad Shaker reservoir and countryside if you prefer. Along the way, you'll stop at Volubilis to walk through the ruined Roman city with its basilicas, triumphal arch, and mosaics (a guided tour is available if you want more context). Next comes Moulay Idriss Zerhoun where you'll check out the panoramic viewpoint and walk through the town center before grabbing lunch. Then you're into Meknes to see the Imperial City, which includes Moulay Idriss's stables, granary, underground prison, and mausoleum, plus the Mansour Gate, the food market, and El Hidem Square. After that, you'll drive north into the mountains, arriving in Chefchaouen before sunset.

Chefchaouen
You've got the entire day to explore Chefchaouen, and there's plenty to see in this blue town set in the mountains at 600m elevation. The old city has those distinctive sky-blue painted walls and streets built right into the mountainside. You'll want to check out the Kasabah fortress, the Ras El Maa river valley, and the Spanish Mosque (which requires about a 30-minute hike from town). Whether you wander around on your own or go with a guide is completely up to you, so you can move at whatever pace works best.

Expect to cross the stream at least ten times along the way while you spot small waterfalls and picnic spots, and if you're lucky, wild Barbary apes. If you're up for more hiking, experienced walkers can continue another hour to reach the main waterfall. There's also the option to rent a 4x4 and drive mountain roads toward Azilane and Talassemtane villages if hiking isn't your thing. You'll find snack spots along the way, and then you head back to your Chefchaouen hotel by evening.

Chefchaouen to Northern Coast or Tangier
After leaving Chefchaouen this morning, you've got several directions you can take in northern Morocco. You could visit Tetouan to see its UNESCO-protected old medina with the Kasbah and American Legation. Or head toward the Mediterranean coast to places like Martil, M'diq, or Marina Samir, which are only about 15 minutes from Tetouan. Once you're at the beach, you can spend the afternoon swimming, relaxing, riding horses, or windsurfing if you're into that. Later, you can either stay at a beachfront hotel or drive to Tangier to sleep there, depending on what appeals to you.

From there, you'll check out the Caves of Hercules, which were carved over centuries by nature and people. The local legend says Hercules slept here before his 11th labor, which adds some character to the visit. After that, you head back to Tangier for the afternoon to walk through the historic old medina and see the Kasbah fortress and the American Legation, which is now a cultural center and museum housed in one of America's first international diplomatic posts.
