Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Cusco

After picking you up at the airport, you'll head into Cusco to check out the imperial city's main sights. Start at Plaza de Armas, then walk over to see the Twelve-Angle Stone, a remarkable example of Inca construction. The pre-Columbian art museum gives you good context for what you'll see throughout the week. From there, you'll visit the Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha) and Santo Domingo Monastery, which sits right on top of the temple ruins, showing the layering of history. Before heading to your hotel in the Sacred Valley, stop by San Pedro market to get a feel for local life and grab something to eat if you're hungry.

    Start point

  2. Day 2

    Sacred Valley

Your day in the Sacred Valley starts at the Moray archaeological site, where circular terraces create an unusual landscape that researchers still debate about. From there, you'll head to the Maras Salt Flats, where families have harvested salt using the same methods for centuries. The ponds reflect sky and mountains, making it worth spending time with your camera. In the afternoon, you'll see Ollantaytambo Fortress, which controlled the valley and still shows the engineering skill of the Inca. Back at your 4-star hotel with spa facilities, you can opt for a massage if your legs need it.

Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu to Cusco

You'll leave the Sacred Valley and drive to Ollantaytambo Station to catch the train heading toward Aguas Calientes. The journey takes a few hours and winds through the Andes, getting more tropical as you descend. Once you reach Aguas Calientes, you'll board a bus that climbs the switchbacks up to Machu Picchu. You'll have time to walk through the citadel, seeing the temples, residences, and agricultural terraces. Later you'll retrace your steps, taking the bus back down and catching the train back to Ollantaytambo, then driving to Cusco for the night.

The drive gets you to the trailhead at 4,680m/15,354 feet, where the air is noticeably thinner. From there, you'll walk for about an hour and a half to reach the summit above 5,000m/16,404 feet. The colorful mineral bands of Rainbow Mountain stretch across the ridge, created by oxidized minerals in the rock. After an hour taking in the views and catching your breath, you'll head back down for another 1.5 hours to Cusipata, where lunch is waiting, then it's the drive back to Cusco.
