Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Windhoek to Swakopmund

You'll get picked up from your Windhoek accommodation and head north through Okahandja, Karibib, and Usakos toward the coast. The drive takes you to Walvis Bay first, where you can see the lagoon with its flamingos and other marine life. From there it's on to Swakopmund, a colonial German town from 1892 that sits right between the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean. Check in at your centrally located hotel, then you're free to find lunch and dinner on your own.

    • Observe flamingos and marine wildlife including dolphins, whales, and Cape fur seals

  2. Day 2

    Walvis Bay Cruise

After breakfast, someone will pick you up and drive you to Walvis Bay for a lagoon cruise. You'll board a boat and sail out to see Pelican Point lighthouse, which stands 34 meters tall and was built in 1932. If the weather cooperates, you might head onto the open Atlantic. A local guide goes with you the whole time. Lunch happens onboard with local fish, Walvis Bay oysters, sparkling wine, and Namibian beer. You'll get back to Swakopmund in the afternoon with free time to do other things. Dinner is your own expense.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Light lunch provided on board the cruise - local fish, oysters, sparkling wine, and Namibian beer)

    Included Activities

  3. Day 3

    Sandwich Harbour Excursion

You're heading out for an adventurous trip to Sandwich Harbour, a protected Ramsar site about 50 km south of Walvis Bay. The route takes you south along the coast into the desert and across the Kuiseb River Delta. For the last 8 km, you'll drive on a narrow beach strip squeezed between massive dunes and the ocean (this section closes at high tide, so timing matters). You'll explore the lagoon, walk the shore, and climb the dunes for views. On the way back, you'll experience dune roller coasting over some of Namibia's tallest dunes. Back in Swakopmund by afternoon with the rest of your day free. Your guide picks you up tomorrow at 11:00. Dinner is on your own.

    Meals
Breakfast, Snack (Snacks provided during the Sandwich Harbour excursion)

    Included Activities

    • Drive through Kuiseb River Delta and coastal dunes

  4. Day 4

    Swakopmund to Sossusvlei

You leave Swakopmund around 11:00, which gives you time to sleep in or wander town. Then it's east into the Namib Desert across gravel plains with mountain inselbergs scattered around. This afternoon you'll cross two major mountain passes: the Kuiseb Pass with its steep drop into a canyon, then the Gaub River canyon. After that the landscape flattens out and you cross the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 degrees south where you can stop for photos. You'll pass through Solitaire and arrive at your desert camp for the next two nights.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  5. Day 5

    Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon

Early start before dawn for breakfast, then head to the dunes to catch sunrise, which is ideal for photos. You arrive at Sesriem National Park when it opens and drive 60 km into the dunes to reach the 2x4 car park. A 4x4 shuttle takes you the final 5 km through an old riverbed to Sossusvlei. On foot you can explore and climb one of the world's highest sand dunes, some reaching 300 meters. Dead Vlei is next, an ancient pan surrounded by skeletal camelthorn trees over 1,000 years old. You can stop at Dune 45 and climb if you have the energy. Return that way and take a short trip into Sesriem Canyon where the Tsauchab River has carved a cooler riverbed. Head back to camp in the late afternoon.

Clarification on item 2.No music played entire trip, driver was in separate cabin so did not hear most requests. No music requested by passengers was played however, driver and cook played their own music and spoke in native language to each other loudly in front cabin which I found rather rude. There were 5 passengers most of who would have preferred to listen to music. [Chameleon Safaris Namibia replied: Please kindly be advised that on the pre-departure information provided for, it is stated that we will not play music during the safari as it is difficult to select/choose a genre that can accommodate everyone in a vehicle.]
