7 Days in Namibia, incl. Etosha and Sossusvlei
The 2100km route showcases Namibia's highlights across 8 key destinations including Etosha National Park, Swakopmund, and Sossusvlei, with stays at Desert Camp and wildlife encounters at N/a'an ku sê Sanctuary.
- Day 1
Windhoek & Wildlife Sanctuary
Start your Namibian adventure in Windhoek and travel 50km east to the N/a'an ku se Wildlife Sanctuary. "The carnivore feeding tour was humbling - seeing rescued cheetahs and learning about conservation efforts really sets the tone for the whole trip." Book an early flight to avoid missing the sanctuary visit if you arrive after 10 AM.
- Day 2
Windhoek to Etosha National Park (500km)
Leave at 7 AM and drive north through Otjiwarongo to reach Etosha. Visit the park's waterholes strategically with your guide who knows which ones attract the most wildlife. Stay at a lodge inside the park with a floodlit waterhole. "The illuminated waterhole at night was magical - we saw both elephants and endangered black rhinos coming to drink." Bring light layers since mornings are cool but afternoons heat up.
- Day 3
Full Day Etosha Safari
- Day 4
Damaraland to Swakopmund (510km)
Take a scenic drive through Damaraland's pink granite landscapes. You can meet local Himba and Herero people at roadside craft markets along the way. Drive past Brandberg Mountain and along the foggy Skeleton Coast until you reach the German colonial town of Swakopmund. Book your dinner reservations early as seafood restaurants fill up fast.
- Day 5
Swakopmund to Sesriem (350km)
You can try morning activities in Swakopmund like quad biking or sandboarding before leaving at 11:30 AM. The route crosses vast gravel plains and mountain passes including Kuiseb Canyon. "The transition from coast to desert was incredible - take photos at the Tropic of Capricorn sign." Spend the night near Sesriem where you'll access the dunes.
- Day 6
Sossusvlei Dunes
Start before dawn to see sunrise at the dunes. Take a 4x4 shuttle through deep sand to reach Dead Vlei's ancient camel thorn trees. "Climb the dunes early before the sand gets too hot - it's much easier barefoot." Visit Dune 45 and Sesriem Canyon. The 300m dune climbs are challenging so pack extra water.
- Day 7
Return to Windhoek (320km)
Drive back on the mountain route and stop at Solitaire for their famous apple pie. Book flights after 7 PM to allow time for delays. "The distances are long but the ever-changing landscapes make the drives fascinating." Consider adding extra days if possible since this itinerary covers substantial ground quickly.
7 Days in Namibia, incl. Sossusvlei and Etosha
A circuit through 4 major Namibian destinations showcases Sossusvlei's dunes, Swakopmund's coast, Walvis Bay's flamingos, and Etosha's wildlife. Six nights camping with daily activities and most meals included for approx. $190 per day.
- Day 1
Windhoek to Sossusvlei
Leave Windhoek early for the 5-hour drive to Sossusvlei. You'll see the landscape transform as you go, so have your camera ready. "The drive itself was part of the experience - watching the terrain change from bush to desert was incredible," one traveler shared. Plan to arrive at Solitaire Lodge before sunset to get a good night's rest for tomorrow's early start.
- Day 2
Sossusvlei Dunes
Get up around 4:30 AM to reach Dune 45 for sunrise when the sand is still cool enough to climb. Make sure to wear closed shoes with good grip because the sand gets very hot by mid-morning. After Dune 45, check out the ancient camel thorn trees at Dead Vlei. If you still have energy, climb Big Daddy dune. End your day at Sesriem Canyon when the temperature drops in late afternoon.
- Day 3
Sossusvlei to Swakopmund
The drive to the coast takes about 4 hours. Stop at Walvis Bay's lagoon during high tide to see thousands of flamingos. You'll reach Swakopmund by afternoon, where the coastal breeze offers a nice break from the desert heat. Your campsite is on the edge of town, close to the German colonial buildings.
- Day 4
Cape Cross Day Trip
Take a drive north on the Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross Seal Colony (about 1.5 hours away). One visitor advised: "Bring a bandana or face mask - the seal colony smell is overwhelming but the experience is unforgettable." Look for shipwrecks on your way back. Once you're back in Swakopmund, you can try activities like sandboarding or scenic flights.
- Day 5
Swakopmund to Etosha
- Day 6
Etosha National Park
Start your full day of game viewing at sunrise to catch predators in action. Your guide will take you to eastern waterholes in the morning and the western section after lunch. What people love about 7-day Namibia tours
- 7 Day Namibian Highlights Accommodated Safari
Hello, I generally don't write reviews or very short ones but this tour was clearly worth an exception... We did Chameleon's 7 days Namibian highlight in April 2014. We selected this tour for 2 main reasons - firstly, you get to see some of the North and the South without having to go back through Windhoek or staying too long in Swakpomund... Nice to see it but not that an interesting place - for us- so 1 night was just great. Secondly, we weren't sure if we were up for a camping tour and this accommodated tour, being priced extremely competitively compared to most of the campings one, comforted us in our decision. In all honesty due to the pricing we expected pretty basic facilities but we were wrong, very wrong. First of all our guide, Morne, was extremely good - local, very knowledgeable, curious about his country and sharing his findings, also curious about his customers, friendly, smiling, helpful, funny and a great cook - quite important as about half the meals are prepared by the guide possibly with some of your help (optional). The truck (up to 12 people, we were between 7 and 10 depending on the legs of the trip) offered good visibility to all - notably a great forward one (not common) and a lifting roof - great for game drive. Truck was clean, well maintained and handled well the gravels roads (most roads are gravel). On some days, the driving time is quite high but the comfort of the truck, the explanations from the guide and the unbelievable, dramatic and often changing sceneries make this longer drives ok. As they say - a hungry tourist is an unhappy tourist. Chameleon and Morne made sure we were well fed. Food was good, well cooked and in quantity. When not cooking, provided meals (by accommodations) were also very good. Finally, last but not least, the accommodation was great - this is were we had expected pretty basic facilities but not a all. All accommodations were clean and comfortable. The great surprise were the 2 permanent tents (part hard build, part canvas... Closer to a house than a tent)... The one near Etosha can be opened up onto the nature... And best of all the desert camp in the south. First class with breathtaking views of the surroundings mountains and desert. Just great. We had some great game runs in Etosha - saw quite a lot of animals including Rhino, Hyena, Lions, Giraffes, Jackals, Baboons, and a whole bunch of grazers. We also got to see more predators but in captivity (not releasable) such as lions, leopards, cheetah, wild dogs, ... Our guide was very knowledgeable on encountered animals, and detailed material was available. The drive through Damaraland and the coastal desert from Etosha to the skeleton coast (Swakpomund) was quite long but you get to meet some local tribes and the scenery is impressive notably if you have never driven in a desert. Swakopmund is a nice one night break to have some seafood and a good night sleep with a lie in (All other mornings are pretty/very early starts). The drive from Swapokmund to the desert camp is great with astonishing and ever changing sceneries - this was a beautiful drive day. The last step of the trip is the national park of Namib-Naukluft with Sossuvlei, Sesrien canyon and mostly Deadvlei. The famous "orange" Namib desert. We got to walk up the highest (big daddy) dune with was finally quite easy to climb as our guide ensured we were there early enough to handle the heat. Much more info on the content of the trip is available on Chameleon website but what we really wanted to point out is the quality of the equipment, facilities and guide as well as the great value for money. We were fully satisfied with our choice and it exceeded all expectations and would recommend this without hesitation. Some younger and older travelers were also on our tour and all seemed satisfied by provided facilities and rhythm of the tour. Thank you Morne and Chamaleon, Michael and Lenka (35-40 year old back/flash-packers)
