Itinerary
- Day 1
Olympia to Sol Duc River
You'll start with a pickup from your Olympia hotel and drive 3.5 hours north on Highway 101. The route takes you past Hood Canal, the Straits of Juan de Fuca, and Lake Crescent, so there's plenty to see out the window. After stopping for lunch near the trailhead, you'll head out on a 3.3 mile hike to Deer Lake campsite. The trail climbs about 1650 feet, so it's a solid workout but nothing extreme. Once you reach camp, you'll set everything up and have a backcountry dinner. If energy permits, a short sunset walk before settling in for the night is a nice way to end day one under the stars.

Heart Lake
This is your big hiking day. The High Divide Trail covers 6.3 miles and gets you to Bogachiel Peak at 5,474 feet with about 1750 feet of elevation gain. From up there, you're looking at views of Mount Olympus, Seven Lakes Basin, and the Hoh River Valley spreading out in all directions. If you're hiking in summer, you might come across alpine wildflowers and wild huckleberries along the way. The trail then descends into Heart Lake, which sits in an alpine basin. You'll camp there for the night and have another backcountry dinner after settling in.

Along the way, you'll stop at Sol Duc Falls, which is really worth the detour to see. After that, you head back to the vehicle and drive 3.5 hours south on Highway 101 back to Olympia.
