Itinerary
- Day 1
Margaret River
You'll drive south through Mandurah and Bunbury to reach Busselton, where the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere stretches into the water. From there, the route hugs the coast at Canal Rocks before turning inland on Cave Road through forest to Cape Leeuwin, the southwestern tip where two oceans meet. After stopping at Hamelin Bay, you'll head back to Margaret River for the evening.

- Day 2
Margaret River
Following breakfast, you'll spend the morning and early afternoon in the Margaret River wine region doing tastings at local wineries. Biking through the area is optional if you're interested in exploring that way. The Mediterranean climate here supports both vineyards and popular surfing beaches. Later in the afternoon, you'll drive to the karri forests around Pemberton and Walpole, shifting from wine country to tall timber.

Pemberton/Walpole to Albany
If you're up for it, there's a chance to climb Gloucester Tree, one of the world's highest fire lookout trees. In the Valley of the Giants, you can walk among 300 to 400 year old trees on the Tree Top Walk platform and see the forest from above. In the afternoon, William Bay National Park offers Elephant Rocks and Green Pool, a swimming beach with striking water colors. You'll reach Albany by evening.

Albany to Esperance
Start with an Albany city tour and climb Mount Clarence for views over King George Sound, where Western Australia's first colonists arrived in 1826. You'll see Natural Bridge and The Gap in Torndirrup National Park before heading inland to the Stirling Range. Weather allowing, there's a hiking opportunity toward Bluff Knoll, the range's highest point. Later you'll continue toward Esperance for the night.

Esperance to Kalgoorlie-Boulder
The Great Ocean Drive around Esperance takes you to Rotary Lookout, Twilight Beach, and Pink Lake, each with distinct character. Cape Le Grand National Park comes next with its white sand bays and blue-green waters. Then comes a long 400 kilometer stretch through increasingly sparse landscape before you reach Kalgoorlie-Boulder, home to the 'Golden Mile,' Australia's richest gold mining region.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder
You'll tour Kalgoorlie itself and check out the museum to understand the region's mining history. North of the city sits the Two-up shed where you can learn about this traditional Australian gambling game. From Menzies, an old mining town, a dirt road leads to Lake Ballard where Antony Gormley's 51 figure sculptures dot the colorful landscape in striking contrast. You'll return to Kalgoorlie with the rest of the day free.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Hyden
The Superpit tour shows the largest open-cast gold mine in Australia and its modern mining techniques in action. Following historic gold rush routes, you'll drive to Coolgardie on the Great Eastern Highway. From there, the unpaved but manageable Emu Fence Road takes you toward Hyden, leaving the mining atmosphere behind as the landscape changes.

Hyden to Perth
You'll spend time at Wave Rock, a natural formation that looks like a frozen wave, and explore its geological story. Driving north through Western Australia's wheat belt toward Perth, you'll stop in York, the state's oldest inland town, to walk among well-preserved pioneer buildings. A dromedary farm visit provides history on camels in Australia. You'll arrive at your Perth hotel in the evening.
