Itinerary
- Day 1
Paro to Thimphu
You'll fly into Bhutan with views of the Himalayas as you approach, then head to Thimphu to settle in. Once you get to your hotel, plan to check out the Takin Preserve where you'll see the country's national animal up close. If your visit falls Thursday through Sunday, the Centenary Farmers' Market is worth walking through to see local produce and goods. Tashichhoedzong fortress is an impressive stop with its fortress walls and religious significance, and you can spend time browsing traditional crafts at the Craft Bazaar before the day winds down.

- Day 2
Thimphu to Punakha
After breakfast, you'll drive toward Punakha by way of Dochula Pass, which gives you those panoramic Himalayan views throughout the journey. At the pass, you can walk around the 108 chortens and visit Druk Wangyal Lhakhang temple before stopping for refreshments at Dochula Resort. Later, head to the fertility shrine at Chhimi Lhakhang monastery, then continue to Punakha Dzong where you'll see the intricate woodwork and learn about its historical importance in Bhutanese culture.

- Day 3
Punakha to Paro
You'll travel to Paro, passing through Dochula Pass and southern Thimphu along the way. After checking in and grabbing lunch, the National Museum is a good place to spend a couple hours learning about Bhutanese culture and heritage, it's housed in a historic watchtower with interesting displays. From there, walk through Paro Dzong fortress to see its distinctive architecture, then head to Nyamai Zampa, the oldest traditional cantilever bridge, for a walk across it. By evening, you can browse the local handicraft stores before heading back.

Paro
The hike up to Taktsang Monastery takes around 1.5 hours to reach the viewpoint, and you'll see the monastery clinging to the cliff face as you climb. The views along the way are quite good, and from the viewpoint, you can decide whether to push on for another hour to reach the monastery itself. Stop at the viewpoint cafeteria for lunch on your way back down. Later in the day or on the return journey, you can visit Kichu Temple, an ancient site that's one of 108 temples built back in the 7th century as part of a spiritual initiative.
