Itinerary
- Day 1
Curtea de Arges - Poenari - Transfagarasan Highway - Sibiu
You'll start by checking out Curtea de Arges and its 13th-century Royal Church, then head to Poenari Fortress where the ruins sit high on a cliff overlooking the Arges River. From there, you're driving the Transfagarasan Highway, Romania's most famous road stretching over 150 km with its peak at 2,042 metres/6,703 feet. The drive takes you to Sibiu where you'll walk through the city, see the Evangelical Cathedral and the Old City Center before settling in for the night.

- Day 2
Turda - Cluj Napoca - Surdesti
Start your day at Turda Salt Mine, exploring the former Iosif, Terezia, and Rudolf mines with their medieval salt machinery and an altar carved right into the salt wall. You'll then drive to Cluj Napoca and walk around the Old City Center, taking in Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic-style buildings from the 17th century. Later, head to Surdesti village to see the wooden church, a 72-meter high structure completed in 1721 with its remarkable 54-meter tower. You'll spend the night in Vadul Izei, Maramures.

Maramures - Sapanta - Sighet
Your day begins at the local market in Maramures to get a feel for regional life and traditions. After that, you're heading to Sapanta to see the Merry Cemetery with its colorful crosses and tombstones decorated with humorous poems about the deceased. Next, you'll visit the Memorial Museum for the Victims of Communism in Sighet to learn about Romania's history during communist rule. You'll stay overnight in Vadul Izei, Maramures.

- Day 4
Barsana - Borgo Pass - Ciocanesti
You start at Barsana Monastery, a 57-meter high wooden structure set in beautiful scenery. Then you're crossing Borgo Pass at 1,201 metres/3,941 feet, a winding mountain route between Moldavia and Transylvania with great views and traditional wooden cabins along the 8-km ravine. Later in the afternoon, you'll reach Ciocanesti Village, known for its colorfully painted houses. You'll stay the night in Gura Humorului.

Voronet - Sucevita - Moldovita - Humor Monasteries - Egg Painted Museum
You'll visit four UNESCO-listed painted monasteries of Bucovina. First is Voronet Monastery with its famous blue frescoes, founded in 1488 by Stephen the Great and featuring artwork from the Battle of Vaslui. Next comes Sucevita Monastery with biblical scenes and its fortified church, then Moldovita Monastery from 1532 blending Byzantine and Gothic styles. You'll also see Humor Monastery, built around 1530 with thick river rock walls for defense. Before wrapping up, you'll check the Lucia Condrea Egg Painted Museum in Moldovita with over 5,500 artistic pieces across 56 cases. Overnight in Gura Humorului.

Bicaz Gorge - Nicolae Popa Museum - Red Lake - Sighisoara
You're driving through the 8-km Bicaz Gorge, one of Romania's most dramatic passages with serpentine roads and rock walls creating a thrilling route. You'll stop at the Nicolae Popa Museum in Tarpesti to see works by the local naive sculptor. Later, you head to Red Lake, a natural formation created by an 1838 landslide at 980 metres/3,215 feet altitude, where you can see traditional cabins and hotels along its shores. You'll end the day in Sighisoara.

Sighisoara - Viscri - Brasov
You start exploring Sighisoara Old Town, a medieval fortress built in 1280 and birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, checking out the Clock Tower and Arms Museum. The citadel has been continuously inhabited for over 700 years. After that, you'll head to Viscri Village with its 12th-century fortified church and historical significance. Later you arrive in Brasov to explore Council Square in the city center, surrounded by 18th-19th century buildings and hosting markets since 1364. You'll stay overnight in Brasov.

- Day 8
Bran Castle - Peles Castle - Sinaia Monastery - Bucharest
You'll visit Bran Castle, widely believed to inspire Bram Stoker's Dracula tale, where you can try traditional foods like handmade cheeses, palinka brandy, and locally made ham and sausages. From there, you head to Peles Castle, the Romanian royal family's summer residence and one of Europe's finest castles. After that, you'll stop at Sinaia Monastery, founded in 1695 by Prince Mihail Cantacuzino and home to Orthodox monks. Your final leg takes you back to Bucharest.
