Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Machame Gate

You'll drive from Moshi to Machame Gate this morning, handle the park paperwork, and meet your climbing team. Then you start walking into dense rainforest on a steady climb. The trail gets wet and muddy in spots as it winds through thick vegetation, so watch your footing.

  2. Day 2

    Shira Plateau

Keep climbing through the forest until the terrain gets steeper and opens onto Shira Plateau. The views of the mountain start showing themselves, and you can see Mt Meru in the distance above Arusha town. It's a good day for taking in the landscape as you gain elevation.

  3. Day 3

    High Moorland

You'll trek across high moorland on the southwest side of the mountain today. Walking under the Lava Tower and Western Breach, the views shift dramatically as you go. The altitude increases, but you're following the climbing strategy of walking high and sleeping low for better acclimatization.

  4. Day 4

Great Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

Drop down into Great Barranco ravine, then tackle the steep scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. It's not technical climbing but it's a long haul that'll tire you out. Pass underneath Heim and Kersten glaciers on your way to Karanga valley, then climb to Karanga Camp. If you're feeling strong, there's an optional acclimatization trek in the afternoon.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Descend into Great Barranco
    • Climb Great Barranco Wall
    • Pass underneath Heim and Kersten glaciers

  5. Day 5

    Barafu Camp

After sleeping well and eating, trek across desolate scree slopes to Barafu Camp at higher altitude where nothing grows. This is a hard, steep day and the altitude makes it tougher. You'll arrive, have lunch, rest through the afternoon, then eat early before trying to sleep. You'll wake between 11pm and midnight for the summit push.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    Summit Push to Uhuru Peak

Start climbing around midnight, heading steeply upward through scree for 4 to 5 hours until you reach Stella Point on the crater rim as sunrise happens. You'll see dramatic ice cliffs and Mawenzi peak from there. Then walk another hour to Uhuru Peak, the actual summit. After that, you descend back through Stella Point to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then down to Millennium Camp to finally rest.
