Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Jackson to Yellowstone

A 3-hour shuttle gets you from Jackson to Yellowstone's northwest corner near the Gallatin Mountains. Once there, you'll help prepare the llamas and get oriented before heading out on a 6-mile hike through Fan Creek drainage. The route takes you past scenic meadows where moose often hang around the willow areas, so keep your eyes open. You'll camp above Fan Creek tonight and have a solid backcountry dinner to fuel up after the day's travel and hiking.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Hearty backcountry dinner)

    Included Activities

    • Shuttle to trailhead
    • Llama trek orientation
    • Hike up Fan Creek drainage (6 miles)
    Landmarks
    Gallatin Mountains
    Fan Creek
    Yellowstone National Park
  2. Day 2

    Fan Creek to Sportsman Lake

After breakfast, you'll pack up and hike 7 miles further up Fan Creek toward the headwaters. From there, the real work begins as you climb 1,100 feet over a high pass that offers great views of the surrounding terrain. A picnic lunch happens at the pass before you drop 800 feet down into Sportsman Lake, nestled at Electric Peak's base. Tonight's camp is here, and if you're interested, there's time to fish before another backcountry dinner.

    Meals
Breakfast (Delicious breakfast before breaking camp), Lunch (Picnic lunch at the high pass), Dinner (Wonderful backcountry dinner)

    Included Activities

    • Hike to Fan Creek headwaters and high pass (7 miles)
    • Descend to Sportsman Lake

    Optional Activities

    • Fishing at Sportsman Lake
    Landmarks

  3. Day 3

    Sportsman Lake Layover

This day is different since camp stays put near Sportsman Lake. You'll do a 7-mile hike out to Electric Pass for views, then eat a picnic lunch while you're up there. After that, it's the 7-mile walk back to base camp for the evening. You get to relax, enjoy some good food and company, and actually rest rather than pack and move everything again.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Picnic lunch at Electric Pass), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike to Electric Pass (7 miles round trip)
    Landmarks
    Electric Pass
  4. Day 4

    Sportsman Lake to Fan Creek

Start slow this morning since you can take your time breaking down camp. You'll hike 7 miles back into the Fan Creek drainage, retracing yesterday's route. It's your final night in the wilderness, so dinner is special—think of it as a celebration of what you've accomplished over the past few days out here.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (Final backcountry feast)

    Included Activities

    • Hike back to Fan Creek drainage (7 miles)
    Landmarks

  5. Day 5

    Fan Creek to Jackson

The last stretch is a 6-mile hike down Fan Creek back to the trailhead. Once you reach the parking area, load into the shuttle for the 3-hour ride back to Jackson. The drive gives you time to watch the Wyoming landscape roll by and think back on everything you did out in the backcountry.
