Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Reykjavik to Heimaey (Westman Islands) to Hella

You'll head out from Reykjavik early in the morning and travel southeast toward the coast. From there, you'll catch a ferry over to Heimaey in the Westman Islands. Once you arrive, a guided bus and walking tour takes you through the volcanic terrain, including the 'Pompeii of the North' excavation site and a volcano crater. Keep an eye out for puffins and other migratory birds during the exploration. After the guided portion wraps up, you'll have some free time to wander around Heimaey town on your own before heading back to the ferry. The return journey takes you to the mainland and then to your overnight spot in Hella.

    Included Activities

    • Return ferry trip to the Westman Islands
    • Bus and walking tour of Heimaey village
    • Visit to 'Pompeii of the North' volcanic excavation site

  2. Day 2

Hella to Seljalandsfoss to Vik to Skogar to Hella

This day focuses on Iceland's powerful natural features. You'll start at Seljalandsfoss waterfall and actually walk behind the cascading water, which is quite the experience. Next comes the famous Vik lava show where you'll see a volcanic eruption re-enacted with flowing lava and real heat. Then you walk across the black lava beach at Reynisfjara to check out birdlife and unusual rock formations. After lunch, you'll explore the Skogar Folk Museum with its traditional turf houses, followed by a stop at Skógafoss waterfall, which is seriously powerful. If you're interested, there's an optional glacier hike available as well.

You'll also see sizzling sulfur springs and geothermal activity with steam rising from the ground. Grab a picnic lunch and then spend free time exploring the area or taking a dip in a natural geothermal stream if you'd like. Before heading out, you'll stop at Hjalparfoss waterfall. This Outlander tour was wonderful. It was booked with Rabbies which was excellent. The group was a group of 15 people which I liked. The bugs driver/ tour guide Lizzie was fantastic. Super sweet and chock full of stories and knowledge. The itinerary and overall organization was good. I felt we did a lot more Outlander heavy stuff on day 1 and day 4 which I loved. In the town of Falkland, we had dinner and further spend much time exploring there and got tons do some photos but that felt a bit rushed and this town I looked forward to see while area small, I wanted to soak in a bit more. We entered all castles with no issues as 99% of them came pre booked or were free to enter with exception of midhope castle. The accommodations provided were both excellent in my opinion. I was very happy where I stayed and had a full Scottish breakfast at both places. During the tour there were plenty of times bathroom breaks and a lunch break. The tour bus was easy to find in Edinburgh with the instructions provided and we were dropped off same location with ease. I highly recommend.

    Asked on March 17th, 2023

My mother is 83. She uses a cane at times, and is limited in how far she can walk. Is it possible / desirable to try this tour with her, perhaps with a wheelchair? What things will she not be able to access in a wheelchair?

Most attractions are not paved and appropriate for a wheelchair. The ground is often uneven and rocky, sandy, or gravel, and there are a lot of stairs with no ramps available. Your mother would likely miss out on quite a few attractions.
