Itinerary
- Day 1
Reykjavik to Heimaey (Westman Islands) to Hella
You'll head out from Reykjavik early in the morning and travel southeast toward the coast. From there, you'll catch a ferry over to Heimaey in the Westman Islands. Once you arrive, a guided bus and walking tour takes you through the volcanic terrain, including the 'Pompeii of the North' excavation site and a volcano crater. Keep an eye out for puffins and other migratory birds during the exploration. After the guided portion wraps up, you'll have some free time to wander around Heimaey town on your own before heading back to the ferry. The return journey takes you to the mainland and then to your overnight spot in Hella.

Hella to Seljalandsfoss to Vik to Skogar to Hella
This day focuses on Iceland's powerful natural features. You'll start at Seljalandsfoss waterfall and actually walk behind the cascading water, which is quite the experience. Next comes the famous Vik lava show where you'll see a volcanic eruption re-enacted with flowing lava and real heat. Then you walk across the black lava beach at Reynisfjara to check out birdlife and unusual rock formations. After lunch, you'll explore the Skogar Folk Museum with its traditional turf houses, followed by a stop at Skógafoss waterfall, which is seriously powerful. If you're interested, there's an optional glacier hike available as well.

Hella to Landmannalaugar to Reykjavik
An unpaved road takes you to Landmannalaugar, where you'll see the distinctive 'rainbow' mountains with their reds, yellows, and browns created by rhyolite lava formations. You'll also see sizzling sulfur springs and geothermal activity with steam rising from the ground. Grab a picnic lunch and then spend free time exploring the area or taking a dip in a natural geothermal stream if you'd like. Before heading out, you'll stop at Hjalparfoss waterfall. The tour concludes back in Reykjavik, and a Flybus Shuttle transfer will get you to Keflavik International Airport.
