Villach
Start by walking through Villach's old town, taking in the relaxed southern vibe of the area. There are plenty of terrace cafés where you can settle in with a coffee or lunch and watch the town go by. This is a good day to get your bearings and enjoy a slower pace before the cycling begins.

- Day 2
Faaker See
Cycle east from Villach toward Warmbad Villach and then on to Faaker See, where turquoise water sits at the base of the Karawanken mountains. You'll take a break here by the lake with meadows and forests around you, then pedal along a ridge toward the Drau river before heading back to Villach. This route covers about 50 km and alternates between open country and water views.

Villach
Take a train to Spittal in the morning, a town that once served as a hub for medieval pilgrims. From there, follow the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path alongside the Drau river. Stop in Paternion to check out the churches and castles in this market town, then continue pedaling back toward Villach. The route is roughly 40 km and follows the river for much of the way.

Klagenfurt
Head east on the Drau Cycle Path through farmland typical of Carinthia, then make your way to Velden on the shores of Lake Wörthersee with its turquoise water. After that, pass through the Keutschach lake valley which has four lakes and small shrines along the route. Follow the Lendkanal into Klagenfurt, Carinthia's capital. This day covers about 50 km and takes you through several different landscapes.

Lake Ossiach Loop
Leave Villach following the Seebach stream, and you'll see Landskron castle ruins on the hillside. Cycle around Lake Ossiach, which is 11 kilometers around and surrounded by the green Gerlitzen mountain. An 11th century monastery with its late Baroque church sits in Ossiach. Stop at the lakeside towns of Steindorf and Bodensdorf before returning to Villach. The full loop is roughly 45 km.

Tarvisio to Villach
Take the train to Italy in the morning, crossing into the three-language border region where Austrian, Slovenian, and Italian cultures meet. In Tarvisio you'll find German, Romance, and Slavic languages all represented. Have a cappuccino here, then cycle back into Austria on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path next to the Gail river with mountain views. This portion is about 35 km and includes some nice river scenery.
