Took the tour hosted by Robert & Frederico. Robert was always full of energy when he spoke and he had lots of stories. Whenever we saw animals on the outback roads he stopped and allowed us to have a look and photograph them. He did this with camels. He found a dead snake on the side of the road and then pulled it into our van for us all to have a look at it. He found a thorny devil on the side of the road and pulled it into the van for all of us to look at it. He was very knowledgeable with explaining the story of the Southern Cross star constellation. I liked that the tour guides allowed us to swap seats in the van and sit up the front with Robert. I liked the number of stops we had including Erldunda at the geographic centre of Australia and the many photo opportunities on the side of the road. It was fabulous to see Uluru and I was amazed at the height and size of it. We saw the sunset over Uluru which changed the colour of the rock which was sensational. We also saw the sunrise over Uluru and I enjoyed visiting the Aboriginal cultural centre. Aboriginal art is stunning and the people are friendly.

Tents no hassle, well organised. Passionate tour guide Robbie went above & beyond to pack a lot in. A great story teller. Flies a nuisance but hey, that’s part of the Aussie experience!

I’ll repeat what I said in messages to Tour Radar & Intrepid - not only was your Tour leader, Scott (who was very good) not told about the pillows we were supposed to be getting, but he wasn’t told that we didn’t need the gold-plated sleeping bags (which we hired, as I said, not ‘purchased’ - the hire cost from a commercial accomodation provider was $30 for 2, as opposed to your $120, so forgive me if I feel we were being ripped off). Also, Scott never has any pillows anyway, and on one night no spare blankets, which was a real problem on a VERY cold night in Central Australia. Regarding my meal, yes I said I was diabetic, and low carbs would be good - how that translates to ‘vegan and dairy free’, I wouldn’t have a clue, please enlighten me. Given that we booked a higher spec tour, which Intrepid cancelled - after we’d made a series of surrounding accomodation & transport bookings - we were very disappointed that some pretty basic, normal things weren’t supplied and/or that we only got a $40 refund. As the 2 oldest people on the Tour, we struggled on occasion with some of the physical expections - which were not the fault of the Tour leader, who was supplying what his bosses had told him to. We are also aware that at least two other customers on the Tour paid about AUD500 less than we were charged - it was on ‘special’ for them; which begs the question as to why we were not offered the same ‘special’ (our revised booking actually took place about a month AFTER those 2 customers received their cheaper price. In relation to this, I note that when we initially booked the higher spec Tour (which was cancelled), there was about a $100 or $150 ‘special’ built in; but you did not even offer that level of ‘special’ to us for this trip, let alone the $500 special others got. We were given only one day to make a decision on the replacement Tour, with NO detailed information except that we would be visiting the same places - we feel we were taken advantage of. This is a serious point I’m raising, and I would like this taken up with your management, as we believe we were overcharged for what we got, and should be repayed some of that charge. Over $NZ2000 per person (over AUD1800) is a LOT for 3 nights, with zero bedding supplied in very cold nighttime weather, not to mention transport (leased minibus from Budget) which is NOT suitable for 1200-1300kms travel for adults - with very little legroom (it was actually very uncomfortable for some of the taller people, including a guy nearly 2m tall) and no internal storage - the sort of minibus used normally for primary school travel! By comparison, we recently did the same length Tour by train in Far North Queensland, with all-motel accomodation, for AUD1600. Don’t get me wrong, the places we visited were all that we hoped for, and your Tour Leader Scott was excellent, worked hard, and provided great cultural, historical and environmental information - it’s just that the physical conditions of the travel and accomodation were not up to scratch, and the price was excessive). We’ve been previously on a Tour under the Intrepid banner (with Kimberley Wild), and had booked another Ireland tour, which fell through due to the pandemic, so we are not anti-Intrepid; we just think the administration of this one was not good and left a lot to be desired! Please pass this on to your management for response - note that I sent this a week ago, and have still not received anything more than an acknowledgement it’s been received.

We really enjoyed the tour or the Uluru and Kings Canyon areas. The driver/guide was very competent, knowledgable and passionate and strongly respected the ancient and current spiritual aspects of Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. He and his assistant went out of their way to make our experience memorable. The tented accommodation at both Kings Canyon and Uluru were excellent and we enjoyed the food, especially the kangaroo steaks.

Approximately what is the start and end time of this tour. I'm looking to align our flights accordingly.

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten November 2022

Thanks for reaching out! Apologies for the confusion, we can verify that there is camping nights only on this itinerary. Unfortunately we cannot assist with booking extra hotel stays. This trip starts Yulara at 1:30pm at the reception of Desert Gardens Hotel. It is very important that you are on time as we will be departing for Kings Canyon at 2pm and are unable to delay our departure due to restrictions on completing our drive after dark. We are not able to wait for delayed flights and so strongly recommend you arrive a day prior to your trip to avoid issues. For your last day, there will be a very early start. The Uluru base walk is 10.6 km of track that takes you around the whole circumference of the rock. It is a Grade 3 walk (moderate) and takes around 3.5 hours to complete. We recommend you book your departure flight from Yulara for after 12:30 pm on Day 4. For those who would prefer to finish the trip in Alice Springs, we offer a transfer at an additional cost from Yulara arriving in Alice Springs at approximately 5:30pm.
