Itinerary
- Day 1
Aswan to Abu Simbel
You'll travel about 280 kilometers south from Aswan to reach the Abu Simbel Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that sits on the west banks of Lake Nasser. The journey takes several hours, so plan for an early start. Once there, you'll see the Great Temple of Ramses II first, which has massive rock-carved statues and intricate details carved right into the cliff face. The temple's facade shows various deities and represents one of ancient Egypt's most impressive architectural achievements. After spending time at the Great Temple, head over to the smaller Temple of Nefertari, which is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and offers its own unique carvings and history. Both temples were actually relocated decades ago to save them from flooding when Lake Nasser was created. By late afternoon, you'll transfer back to Aswan, either returning to your hotel or heading to your Nile cruise depending on your accommodation.
