Itinerary
- Day 1
Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu
Your hotel pickup happens at 4 a.m., then you'll head to Ollantaytambo station for the 6:10 a.m. train to Km 104. From there, the Classic Inca Trail trek begins with views of the Urubamba River and the peaks around you. A guide walks you through your first Inca site with orientation, and then you hike for about three hours to Wiñay Wayna at 2,600m/8,530 feet. Lunch comes at the Alpaca Expeditions campsite with freshly cooked food, after which you walk to the Sun Gate for your initial look at Machu Picchu. Once day visitors clear out, you descend to explore the ruins more freely. Later, a bus takes you down to Aguas Calientes, and dinner happens at Indio Feliz restaurant.

Machu Picchu to Cusco
You'll catch one of the early buses up to Machu Picchu to watch the sunrise. Your private English-speaking guide from Alpaca Expeditions leads a two-hour walking tour, then you have time to wander the ruins on your own. If you have Huayna Picchu tickets, you can spend about 1.5 hours hiking up the mountain and back. The afternoon opens up for either exploring Aguas Calientes town or taking it easy. Later you board the afternoon train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, where a driver meets you and takes you back to your Cusco hotel.
