Itinerary
- Day 1
Arrival to Kandy
You'll arrive at the airport and get transferred to Kandy, the last royal kingdom in Sri Lanka before the British took over in 1815. Once you check in, head to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic to see this important religious site. After that, spend time walking through the busy town bazaar and Kandy market where you can browse local goods. Stop by the gem museum and arts and crafts center to see local artisan work. Dinner happens back at your hotel.

Kandy
After breakfast, take a tuk-tuk ride through the Udawattakele Forest Reserve, a 104-hectare protected area known for bird watching that sits on a hill ridge above the old royal palace. The afternoon brings a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya where you can see the orchid collection and check out the large Javan fig tree that's been there for ages. Back at your hotel, there's a cultural show and dinner to end the evening.

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
You'll have breakfast and then board a scenic train that winds through mountains covered in tea plantations and passing waterfalls. Getting off at Nanu Oya, you'll drive to Nuwara Eliya, which locals call 'Little England' for its colonial feel. Spend time looking at colonial architecture, walking around the Victoria Golf Course designed by Donald Steele, and taking a stroll or riding a bike along Lake Gregory's banks.

Nuwara Eliya
Following breakfast, you'll trek to Horton Plains for about 3 hours. The hike takes you to Baker's Falls where water comes down hard and fast, and then to World's End where you can look out over a 3,700 foot drop. Keep an eye out for sambar deer herds, and if you're fortunate, you might see wild boar, fishing cats, otters, or even the rare Sri Lankan leopard.

Nuwara Eliya to Ella
Start with breakfast, then visit a working tea plantation and factory. You'll walk through the tea bushes on the slopes and see workers in colorful saris picking the best leaves. At the factory, watch the process of how leaves get dried, sorted, and packaged. Around lunchtime, have fresh Ceylon tea while looking out at the misty valleys. Then continue to Ella and visit spots like Mini Adam's Peak, Ella Rock, and the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge for views.

After breakfast, head to Colombo for shopping at boutique stores that carry work from local designers. You can explore the city and try one of the fusion restaurants for something different, or walk through the Pettah district with its narrow streets and mix of sounds and smells. The Dutch Hospital Complex has live music and restaurants if you want to check that out. Colombo's nightlife scene includes clubs and casinos if that interests you.
