Itinerary
- Day 1
Arrival to Monte Amazónico Lodge
You'll arrive at the airport or bus station and head to the Monte Amazónico Lodge office for a pre-tour briefing with Carlos Expeditions. After sorting through your luggage if needed, take a 4X4 truck transfer (about 2 hours) or river transport (6+ hours) to reach the Tambopata River. Once at the lodge, you'll have a welcome breakfast or lunch depending on when you arrive. By afternoon, head out on an introductory rainforest walk where you might spot amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and insects going about their day.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick and Monkey Island
You're up at 4:30 AM for a boat journey (roughly 1.5 hours) to the Chuncho macaw clay lick, the largest of its kind. There you'll see hundreds of parrots and macaws in red and green, plus blue and yellow species eating clay from the river wall. After breakfast, return by boat to Puerto Maldonado, then take another boat (about 1 hour) back to Monte Amazónico Lodge with a regional fruit juice to refresh. Following lunch, cross to Monkey Island on the Madre de Dios River to watch brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, and saddleback tamarin. That evening, search sand banks with a flashlight for caimans and white alligators, and you might see capybaras too. Return for dinner and rest.

Lake Sandoval and Rainforest Night Walk
After breakfast, walk about 3 km through thick rainforest to Lake Sandoval, one of the biggest lakes in Tambopata National Reserve. Climb into a rowing boat to spot shansho cormorant, jacanas, puma heron, buzzards, and also howler monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, tamarins, and sloths. You might come across a family of giant river otters (nearly two meters long), a species that's endangered. Head back to the lodge for a typical lunch. Later in the evening, take another rainforest walk to watch nocturnal insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other animals that come alive at night before dinner and rest.

Canopy Walkway and Departure
Starting at 5:30 AM, take a short jungle walk to the canopy walkway positioned about 30 meters up, where you'll get views across the Madre de Dios River and see the forest from above. From the platforms, you'll spot various birds like toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles. Have breakfast, then return to the city and transfer to the airport or bus station for your departure.
