From the rocky hilltop you'll see Everest, Nuptse, Changtse, Ama Dablam, Taweche, Kantega and the full Khumbu panorama, with Base Camp visible below. Spend as much time as you want up there. Then it's downhill to Gorak Shep for breakfast, then you head to Lobuche and Thugla for lunch, descending past Cholatse to Pheriche.

    Paul

    Asked on December 23rd, 2024

I am 60 years old with a lot of mountaineering experience, but with a lot of worry that I won't be able to make this trek with my son. How many miles per day is this trek? How will I be able to tell if I am in good enough shape to do this? I will commit to the workouts! But I am uncertain if that will be enough. Also, I wonder if you would recommend another trek that might be as beautiful but without Everest. I really want to spend time seeing beautiful things - and Everest is great - but perhaps other treks are better - if not as famous.

    Age Range
    Tour Details
    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten December 2024

The trek you are considering to Everest Base Camp is a physically demanding 14-day journey, with trekking times ranging from 3 to 9 hours per day. On average, you will walk 6 to 12 miles each day, with significant altitude gain (up to 3,000 ft on some days). The trek involves steep ascents and descents through challenging terrain, especially as you near Base Camp. If you are concerned about Everest, you could consider the Annapurna Circuit. Both offer stunning Himalayan views and diverse landscapes without the extreme altitude challenges of EBC. These treks are considered slightly easier and still very rewarding.
