  1. Day 1

    Ushuaia

You'll arrive in Ushuaia and get picked up from the airport for transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore this southernmost city. The Museo del Fin del Mundo gives you context on the region's history, or you can wander the shops along the waterfront. Avenida San Martin runs through town with shops selling gear and souvenirs if you need anything warmer. In the afternoon you'll transfer to the pier, board the M/V Sea Spirit, and settle into your suite. Attend the welcome briefings and introductions, then have dinner on board as the ship sails through the Beagle Channel with evening light catching the peaks.

As you cross the Antarctic Convergence, the water temperature shifts and you'll notice the change in marine life around the ship. The vessel's stabilizing fins help keep things steady if seas get rough. By evening of the second day you should be approaching the South Shetland Islands.

Zodiac cruises take you to Elephant Island where Shackleton's team survived in 1916, and around the Gerlache Strait where massive penguin colonies live. You'll see gentoo, chinstrap, and Adelie penguins, plus humpback and minke whales during peak season. Seals including crabeater, Weddell, and fur seal varieties haul out on ice floes. With 14+ hours of daylight, there's plenty of time for both zodiac excursions and shore landings.

The lecture staff gives presentations and runs briefings preparing you for South Georgia's wildlife and the biosecurity procedures required before landing. This is good time to catch up on sleep or relax in the cabin before things get busy again.

King penguins gather on legendary beaches by the thousands, and macaroni penguin chicks number in the hundreds of thousands. Elephant and fur seal pups crowd the shores. You'll visit the historic Grytviken whaling station and museum, including Sir Ernest Shackleton's grave. There were a lot of glitches associated with the trip. Most were beyond the control of Poseidon but it made it rather a challenging trip. We lost several days in South Georgia which was very disappointing. Flights to the Falklands & back were problematic, arrived at the airport only to be told the flight was cancelled. We had to pay for a nights accommodation & lost a day of the trip. There was no rep from Poseidon to help us regroup. Then once we arrived in Stanley, we didn’t even start for South Georgia for 3 days due to weather. What should have been an intensive South Georgia experience was no better than a trip that included Antarctica. It seemed that we spent 1/2 the trip traveling. Intensive South Georgia trip it was not!

I'm sorry for the late. actually i looking for another one, because 23days too long for me, so i look for 14days tour, depart at 22~28 this month. If you give a just little bit more time, i will make decision.

    • Poseidon ExpeditionsOperatorWritten February 2022

We do not have any 14 day tours that would have availability such last minute. If you are able to make 23 days work I would highly recommend this experience as Antarctica is like a whole different world and a place that is so unique, so to travel within its realm for 23 days would be such an incredible experience.
