Itinerary
- Day 1
Kathmandu to Lukla to Phakding
After a 40 minute scenic flight from Kathmandu lands you in Lukla, the trek to Phakding begins with views of Mt Nupla and Kusum Kangaru visible along the way. You'll be walking for approximately 3 to 4 hours through mountain terrain, so pace yourself accordingly. The morning flight gets you to higher elevation quickly, then the initial trek gives your body a chance to start adjusting.

Phakding to Namche Bazaar
From Phakding, the route takes you through Sherpa villages with forests, waterfalls, and cultural spots to see. Rhododendron trees and giant firs line the path before things get steep as you climb toward Namche Bazaar. Mountain views open up more as elevation increases, and you'll pass through communities where locals live at these heights year-round. The final push to Namche is the hardest part of this day.

Namche Bazaar
This day is set aside for letting your body adjust to altitude in Namche Bazaar. You can take a short hike to Thame, Khunde, Khumjung, or head to Everest View Hotel if conditions are clear enough to see Mount Everest itself. Alternatively, stick around town to walk through local shops and learn about Sherpa culture without overdoing it physically. Either way, keeping the day lighter helps prevent altitude problems.

Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
Starting from Phungithanga, the trek passes through forests where musk deer occasionally appear before the landscape opens up. Then comes a steady climb to Tengboche monastery at 3870m (12,700 feet), surrounded by rhododendrons. This is the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region, and from this elevation you get panoramic views of multiple peaks. The setting here feels peaceful and significant in equal measure.

Tengboche to Dingboche
The walk follows the Imjatse Khola through birches, conifers, and rhododendrons, passing small villages marked with stone walls and prayer flags. Dingboche sits in a lovely valley with beautiful views of surrounding fields and Island Peak rising nearby. This day offers a mix of forest walking and mountain scenery without extreme elevation gain, so it's a decent middle-ground after climbing to Tengboche.

Dingboche
Another acclimatization day in Dingboche gives you options depending on how you're feeling. A 400 meter climb to Nangkartshang Gompa takes a couple hours and offers scenic views, or you can tackle the longer 4 to 5 hour trek along the Imja Khola to Chhukung with views of Makalu and surrounding peaks. Take whichever option suits your energy level at this altitude.

Dingboche to Lobuche
From Dingboche, the trek moves through the Alpine region toward Lobuche, crossing a frozen river at Thukla glacier along the way. You'll see Cholatse, Lobuche, Nuptse, and Pumori peaks as views from this section. The terrain changes noticeably here with less vegetation and more rock and ice, which signals how high you're getting. This is a significant climbing day.

Lobuche to Everest Base Camp to Gorakshep
The route from Lobuche heads between moraine walls and crosses tributary glaciers to reach Gorakshep. After stopping for lunch, you'll walk to Everest Base Camp itself to see where expeditions prepare and get a feel for the climbing atmosphere. Then it's back to Gorakshep for the night. By evening you'll have touched one of the world's most famous places.

Gorakshep to Kala Patthar to Lobuche
An early start takes you up Kala Patthar, which offers 360 degree views of Mount Everest and surrounding mountains, and many consider this one of the best parts of the whole trek. After coming back down, you'll grab breakfast at Gorak Shep, then trek to Lobuche base camp for the night. The views from the summit make the early wake-up worth it.

Lobuche Peak Climb
Starting before dawn, the climb to Lobuche Peak takes approximately 10 hours depending on weather. The summit gives panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Dablam, Tawache, Pumori, Changri, and other surrounding peaks. It's physically demanding but rewards you with a 360 degree vista. Descent goes to Pheriche, so you're looking at a long but memorable day.

Lobuche Peak Summit (Alternative)
This is a backup summit day in case weather was too rough on the Lobuche climb earlier. Lobuche East provides another chance to reach a summit with panoramic mountain views. If conditions didn't cooperate before, this day gives you a second opportunity to push for the top and experience those high altitude vistas.

Pheriche to Tengboche
Hillsides covered with rhododendrons and junipers line this stretch, and spring brings pink and red rhododendron flowers that make the landscape particularly colorful. Before reaching Tengboche, the trail passes through Phunki Thanga with pine forests where mountain goats, snow leopards, and colorful pheasants sometimes appear. The mix of vegetation and wildlife sightings makes this a scenic transition day.

Tengboche to Namche Bazaar
After visiting Tengboche monastery in the morning, the long descent toward Namche Bazaar begins. The trail climbs from Sanasa tea shops and passes through villages with high Himalayan views. After about an hour of relatively easy hiking, you'll reach Namche Bazaar again. This day reverses some earlier terrain but at a faster pace going downhill.

Namche Bazaar to Lukla
From Namche Bazaar, a steep descent starts with suspension bridges crossing the Dudh Koshi river. The trail then becomes more level as you walk through rhododendron and pine forests with snow peaks visible in the distance. You'll reach Phakding for lunch, then continue on to Lukla the same day. This is your last evening with the trek crew, so sharing a meal together marks the transition to heading home.

Lukla to Kathmandu
After thanking the porters for their crucial work throughout the trek, you catch a one hour flight back to Kathmandu. If the flight stays on schedule, arrival at the hotel happens before noon, giving you time for a proper shower and rest. By evening, a farewell dinner with Nepali cultural dance lets you celebrate finishing the trek and reflect on what you've accomplished over the past weeks.

Kathmandu to Airport
