Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Kathmandu to Lukla to Phakding

After a 40 minute scenic flight from Kathmandu lands you in Lukla, the trek to Phakding begins with views of Mt Nupla and Kusum Kangaru visible along the way. You'll be walking for approximately 3 to 4 hours through mountain terrain, so pace yourself accordingly. The morning flight gets you to higher elevation quickly, then the initial trek gives your body a chance to start adjusting.

From Phakding, the route takes you through Sherpa villages with forests, waterfalls, and cultural spots to see. Rhododendron trees and giant firs line the path before things get steep as you climb toward Namche Bazaar. Mountain views open up more as elevation increases, and you'll pass through communities where locals live at these heights year-round. The final push to Namche is the hardest part of this day.

  3. Day 3

    Namche Bazaar

This day is set aside for letting your body adjust to altitude in Namche Bazaar. You can take a short hike to Thame, Khunde, Khumjung, or head to Everest View Hotel if conditions are clear enough to see Mount Everest itself. Alternatively, stick around town to walk through local shops and learn about Sherpa culture without overdoing it physically. Either way, keeping the day lighter helps prevent altitude problems.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Acclimatization hike (optional destinations: Thame, Khunde, Khumjung, or Everest View Hotel)

    Optional Activities

Then comes a steady climb to Tengboche monastery at 3870m (12,700 feet), surrounded by rhododendrons. This is the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region, and from this elevation you get panoramic views of multiple peaks. The setting here feels peaceful and significant in equal measure.

The walk follows the Imjatse Khola through birches, conifers, and rhododendrons, passing small villages marked with stone walls and prayer flags. Dingboche sits in a lovely valley with beautiful views of surrounding fields and Island Peak rising nearby. This day offers a mix of forest walking and mountain scenery without extreme elevation gain, so it's a decent middle-ground after climbing to Tengboche.

Take whichever option suits your energy level at this altitude.

From Dingboche, the trek moves through the Alpine region toward Lobuche, crossing a frozen river at Thukla glacier along the way. You'll see Cholatse, Lobuche, Nuptse, and Pumori peaks as views from this section. The terrain changes noticeably here with less vegetation and more rock and ice, which signals how high you're getting. This is a significant climbing day.

After coming back down, you'll grab breakfast at Gorak Shep, then trek to Lobuche base camp for the night. The views from the summit make the early wake-up worth it.

Before reaching Tengboche, the trail passes through Phunki Thanga with pine forests where mountain goats, snow leopards, and colorful pheasants sometimes appear.
