I've had a wonderful time during my tour in Japan. Pin is a gem! He goes above and beyond to make it a truly unforgettable experience. Like sharing fun places to visit or good places to eat. The one thing that was disappointing is the limited free time. Sometimes, like in Kyoto, he shared some amazing places to see. Unfortunately we only had a hour freetime what was barely enough to get some lunch/dinner.

It was a really fun experience travelling around Japan! There were a variety of activities and I was able to be fully immersed in the culture of Japan. It is important to note that there is very limited free time during the tour. Even when you think there is an hour or two between activities, there really isn’t much with travelling involved! Sometimes we didn’t even have enough time to find lunch (unless it was at a convince store)! The tour guide, Pin, was fantastic. He made the and even better experience. He was extremely helpful with where to eat in every city and how to get to places like the nearest pharmacy. My birthday fell just a few days after the tour but he still found time to give me a cake and celebrate with the group - I’m so grateful for that :)

I had the best time on this tour. It was such a wonderful experience! Our guide, Pin, was absolutely amazing. He is a truly special person - so thoughtful, warm, and incredibly knowledgeable. He made every part of the trip feel meaningful and well cared for. One thing to note is that the physical intensity was much higher than described on the website - there is a lot of walking and moving around, and the tour involves quite a bit of public transport. It is all part of the experience and a great way to see local life, but it is definitely more active than expected, so worth knowing in advance. That said, I absolutely loved the mix of city stays and countryside adventures. Overall, an unforgettable journey that I will always remember!

Excellent tour with a great tour guide in Pin. We fitted a lot in in the two weeks. Saw a lot and experienced every side of Japan, from the big cities to the temple stays and countryside. This tour requires a decent level of fitness. On average we walked about 20,000 to 25,000 steps per day, as clocked on some of our groups smart watches, so be aware of that. Nonetheless a fantastic tour of Japan overall with great history lessons from Pin and other tour guides on the itinerary (my personal favorite was our kendo class). I highly recommend!

I joined the 14(13)-day Japan tour with One Life Adventures and would rate the overall experience 3 out of 5 stars. It was a fascinating journey through both culture and contrasts – beautifully organised, but more physically demanding than expected. Our guide Pin was absolutely outstanding – a clear 6 out of 5. Without him, this would probably have been a 2-star experience. The trip started on a positive note. Pin was organised, warm, and genuinely knowledgeable, making everyone feel comfortable from day one. The welcome dinner was pleasant, and the days in Tokyo were well planned, though many of us were surprised by how much walking was involved — often around 25,000–30,000 steps a day. The sushi-making class was a highlight, and dietary needs were handled with care. Hakone was beautiful despite cloudy weather hiding Mt. Fuji. The Romance Car train was smooth, and the Nabe dinner at a nearby restaurant was one of the coziest evenings of the trip. The guesthouse could have been cleaner, and it felt like a missed opportunity not to include an onsen experience in a region famous for hot springs. Later in Takayama, the optional temple meditation (¥3000) was underwhelming, while the sake tasting, old-town walk and spontaneous onsen visit were wonderful. Kyoto offered strong cultural depth but began to feel repetitive after so many temple visits. The Gion walking tour was great, yet the city itself was crowded and tourist-oriented. I took a personal rest day to recharge — a smart move, as several people were getting tired from constant walking. The Kendo class didn’t appeal to everyone, and the hostel, though fine, was not very central. Arriving in Osaka was a nice contrast — lively, modern and full of energy. I skipped the karaoke night but loved seeing the neon city at night. Osaka Castle was nice, even if not original, and the hotel was by far the best of the trip. My free day exploring Spa World and teamLab Osaka became a highlight. Including more experiences like these would show Japan’s modern, innovative side — something the tour could balance better. Japan leads the world in technology and design, yet that aspect was mostly absent from the itinerary. Nara Park was lovely, with tame deer walking freely among visitors. It was surprising that the Great Buddha Hall (Tōdai-ji Daibutsuden), one of Japan’s most impressive temples, wasn’t part of the main itinerary. The temple stay in Kōyasan was simple but pleasant, though the monk’s meal couldn’t be made gluten-free, which hadn’t been communicated to the guide. A small issue, but an avoidable one. Hiroshima was powerful and moving. The Peace Memorial Park was handled respectfully, with enough time for reflection, and the hotel was comfortable. Miyajima Island, with its floating Torii Gate, was a fitting but familiar end — beautiful, though after so many shrines, it naturally felt less special. As the trip went on, many in the group felt the physical strain — sore legs, blisters, and a longing for rest. If you enjoy full days and lots of movement, you’ll love it. If you prefer a slower pace, this might feel intense. Still, I’m truly grateful to have experienced Japan — both its depth and its diversity. While the itinerary could use a stronger mix of traditional and modern experiences, the logistics ran smoothly and the organisation was solid. But above all, it was Pin’s leadership — his humour, kindness and calm — that made this trip memorable. Thank you, Pin, for your care and dedication — and thank you, Japan, for your beauty, your contrasts, and your kindness. ⸻ Ratings - Tour Itinerary: 3 / 5 - Guide (Pin): 6 / 5 - Accommodation: 3 / 5 - Cultural Balance: 2 / 5 - Overall Experience: 3 / 5

We have had an incredible time throughout our trip. Seeing the busy cities and also the quite side of Japan's more rural area. This trip has both and its been a full on experience. Our tour guide Pin has also made this trip very seamless for us all, he was very accommodating and also helped with food suggestions and places to see in our free time. Also suggested when the best time is to do our laundry.

What would be the best time to visit Japan with low chance of rain, temperature between 15-25 °C, and less crowded? Is it possible to get a warning if a tour date is nearly full?

Late October to early November is one of the best times to travel Japan. Weather is 15-25 °C, rainfall is low, and you'll see autumn foliage without heavy crowds. Another good option is late May to early June. 90% of tour dates in peak seasons sell out in advance. Placing a deposit now secures your spot and allows changes up to 60 days before tour start.

How much is the deposit and will I still be eligible for a sale?

    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten September 2025

Deposit is AUD$350.00. It's unlikely to get a sale during peak travel times. Placing a deposit now will lock in current pricing before 2026 price increases.

Is it possible to switch the tour date to an earlier time or to another One Life Adventures trip?

    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten September 2025

Yes, you can change both tour time and country if done at least 60 days before original tour start. Japan Tour closes 30 days before start date. All date/location changes are subject to availability.

Can you advise on the accommodation for us? We would want to stay in a private room together. Is this possible and do we need to do anything different when booking?

    Accommodation
    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten September 2025

We don't offer a double room upgrade for our Japan tour, so there will be a few nights where you'll be separated. The reason is that we like to include some unique stays, like temple lodging and capsule pods, so you get those unforgettable, authentic experiences that really make you feel immersed in Japanese culture and lifestyle. Here's a breakdown of the accommodation: Nights 1-4 Twin/Double Rooms: If you and your travel companion book together, you'll automatically be placed in the same room for all twin/double nights. Night 5 Temple Stay: This will be a traditional experience with multi-share rooms, the room is either for 9, 5 or 3 people. There are a few double rooms available, which are given on a first-come, first-served basis. If available, couples can opt for one. You can check with your guide once you're on tour. Nights 6, 7 & 8 Ryokan Hostel Gion (Kyoto): You'll be staying in a pod-style dorm. Each person gets their own private pod (not shared), very comfy and a true part of Japan's modern hostel culture. Nights 10, 11, 12 & 13 Twin Rooms Again. Night 11 is another temple stay (a different one), while the rest are regular twin rooms. And yes, during the temple stay, you'll likely sleep on traditional Japanese futon mats laid out on tatami floors. While it might sound basic, they are actually quite cozy and part of what makes the experience feel so authentic.

What is the bathroom situation? Are four sharing one? Is there a lobby bathroom in an emergency? Are there outlets close to the sleeping area for a CPAP?

In Tokyo there are male and female bathrooms per floor (5 floors) plus an extra one in the lobby. In Hakone there are toilets on both floors. In Takayama the rooms have an ensuite and there is an additional toilet by reception. In Kyoto there are 8 male toilets across three floors including two at reception. All accommodations have multiple and easily accessible power points close to where you will be sleeping.

Is there time or opportunity to experience a tea service and/or learn about Geisha/Sumo? These are cultural highlights for us.

    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten August 2025

Tea ceremony is already included in the tour. Kimono can be rented during the tea ceremony. For geisha performance, it's an optional activity. Geisha art performance costs from ¥200 - ¥2000 depending on location and requires advance reservation. You can check out a performance with an apprentice Geisha and other traditional arts at Kyoto Gion Corner, which is walkable from our Kyoto accommodation on the 10 & 14 day tour.

Can we select twin rooms for couples? Or does it have to be same sex? And are there any opportunities for single rooms or rooms for 3?

    Accommodation
    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten August 2025

If you're booking together with your partner, you'll automatically be placed in the same room when the accommodation is a twin/double. On this tour we also have other unique stays such as pods and a temple stay, these ones are either single pods or multi-share rooms, so you'll experience a mix of styles during the trip. Are the rooms shared? Only one person will travel and I wonder if she will be alone or sharing the room. Is the fully guide tour in English, or there is a possibility to have another language?

Yes the guest will share with other travellers of the same gender. On our Japan 14 day tour there are a mix of twin rooms in hotels and guest houses, pod dormitories and a multishare night in the temple! The tour guides are fluent in English and will be running the tours in English Language. It's not possible to request another language.

Unfortunately, at the moment, our tours are open to guests aged 18 and older. While we'd love to welcome everyone, this age requirement is in place for insurance and safety reasons, so unfortunately we wouldn't be able to include your children in the trip.

    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten May 2025

We implemented an age requirement of 18-45 to help manage the dynamic of the tour group and peoples expectations when joining the trip. We do generally see most of our bookings come from guests who are between the ages of 21-39, however as long as you are comfortable with that, then we would absolutely love to have you on board!

    • One Life AdventuresOperatorWritten May 2025

We've just updated our age guidelines, and our Classic, Snapshot, and Expedition tours are now open to travellers aged 18 to 59! That means you are more than welcome to join us on any of these adventures.
