Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Cluj-Napoca to Gura Humorului

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Cluj-Napoca early morning and drives toward Bukovina. You'll stop in Bistrita for a walking tour through this medieval fortified town, seeing the old town layout and historic buildings. After that, you head to Ciocanesti Village where you'll watch Mr. Dumitru work at his blacksmith workshop, learning about traditional metalworking techniques. The main attraction is Voronet Monastery with its distinctive blue exterior and detailed interior frescoes, particularly the well-preserved Last Judgement mural that covers the western wall. Later in the afternoon, you check into your accommodation in Gura Humorului. Dinner features traditional Romanian food with folkloric dancing, giving you a real sense of local culture and traditions for the evening.

    Gura Humorului to Cluj-Napoca

You start with a short drive to Humor Monastery, a small red church built in 1530 with painted exterior frescoes. From there, you continue to Moldovita Monastery, which has gold and blue frescoes dating back to 1537 covering its outer walls. The afternoon focuses on the scenic Transrarau Highway (also called Treasury Road), a 28-kilometer mountain route with dramatic hairpin curves and views reaching up to 1400 meters/4,590 feet elevation. You'll take a hike through the Rarau Mountains to experience the landscape up close, then grab lunch at a local fish farm in Pojorata village where fresh fish is the specialty. After lunch, you drive back toward Cluj-Napoca, arriving around 18:00 in the evening.

The local tour operator Rolandia were great. Really responsive and answered all our questions promptly. All hotels were of a high standard and in great locations. The tour itself was beyond expectations, and our guide Claudia was extremely knowledgeable and went above and beyond to ensure all our needs were met. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday this probably isn't for you but if you want to see as much as possible in a short space of time then this trip is perfect. We even got to see some wild bears!

The tour of Romania greatly exceeded our expectations. There was enough activity every day so that the tour didn't lag. Each day, it seemed, there was a particular surprise that made the day special. The guide, Emil, was wonderful: we can't say enough positive about him. He had a very sophisticated understanding not only of his country, which of course you would expect, and the larger Eastern European region, but I was very impressed with his understanding of the United States in particular. In addition to everything else, he was a very nice guy--humorous, witty, very quick mentally. This guy is a keeper!

The tour was good. there are a lot of cities visited. The drives are long between cities. They should allocate 2 days stay in hotel in the middle of the tour. It was difficult to pack and go every night.until we reached Bucharest and then there is 2 night stay at the end of the tour.the hotels were good. Specially the Log cabin in the mountains. We also think that the tour everyday started too late, that is why there is traffic and longer drives. They should start the day by 8 am. That way you are at the sites earlier and don’t get caught in traffic. The restaurant are not accommodating with regards to separate payments for meals when there is a group sitting together. The tour should inform the restaurant’s they use that there should be options to pay separately for each travellers or if they don’t provide this service the tourist should have the option to sit separately or go to a different restaurant.
