  1. Day 1

    Kilimanjaro Airport

    Your manager and driver from Gemuka Adventures will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drive you to African Tulip Hotel. Once there, your safari manager and mountain guide will go over what's ahead for the climb.

  2. Day 2

    Machame Gate to Machame Camp

    After breakfast at the hotel, you'll head to Machame Gate, which takes about 2 hours by car. You'll register and hand over your luggage, then start climbing through rainforests full of different plants, animals, and birds. Your crew will bring lunch during the hike before you reach Machame Camp to sleep.

  3. Day 3

    Shira Trail to Shira Camp

    A hot breakfast in the mess tent gets the morning going. You'll pack your daypack and head up the fairly steep Shira trail, walking through tall grasses and heather with lots of birds around. On clear days you can see Uhuru Peak from here. Lunch comes out on the trail, and then you arrive at Shira Camp.

  4. Day 4

    Barranco Camp

    This day focuses on acclimatization using the 'climb high, sleep low' approach. You'll hike through the alpine desert with views of the whole Shira plateau opening up as you go higher. After passing Lava Tower at 15,000 feet/4,572 meters, you'll descend through the Grand Barranco canyon to reach Barranco Camp. Warm lunch happens on the trail.

  5. Day 5

    Karanga Camp

    Following a warm breakfast, you'll tackle the Barranco Wall, a rocky formation that takes about 1.5 hours to climb. The views from the top are really great. From there it's mostly downhill or flat as you walk through glacial valleys to Karanga Camp, making this a shorter hiking day overall.

  6. Day 6

    Barafu Camp

    Another acclimatization day takes you to Barafu Camp by midday. The trek is fairly steep but you'll have time to rest after lunch. Your guide might offer an optional acclimatization hike, or you can stay at camp. Dinner happens early, then you'll sleep until 11pm when you get hot drinks and biscuits to get ready for the summit push.

  7. Day 7

    Uhuru Peak Summit

    You leave Barafu after midnight and hike 6 to 7 hours to reach Stella Point, timing it to see the sunrise. The final 40 minutes along a relatively flat path takes you to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. After celebrating and photos, you head back down to Barafu for a warm lunch, then continue down to Millennium or Mweka Camp for your last night.
