Itinerary
- Day 1
Arrival in Arusha
You'll get picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven to your hotel in Arusha, which takes about an hour. Once you arrive, check in and settle in for the evening. Dinner is included, and you'll stay overnight at Mvuli Hotel to rest before the climb begins.

Arusha to Lemosho Glades
After breakfast and a quick briefing about the route ahead, you'll drive for roughly 3 hours to reach Londorossi Park Gate. From there, a 4WD vehicle takes over, heading along forest tracks to Lemosho Glades. Your hike officially starts here on forest trails, and you'll trek toward the campsite called 'big tree' to set up for your first night on the mountain.

Shira Plateau
This is a shorter day of climbing up a steep ridge to Picnic Rock, a small semicircular cliff where the views of Kibo and Shira Plateau's jagged rim are really something special. After resting and taking in the scenery, you'll continue on gentler trails to Shira Plateau at 3,840m. You'll camp near Shira Hut with Kibo's volcanic cone rising above you and the plateau's rock formations all around.

Shira Plateau to Shira Cathedral Peak
Following breakfast, you'll trek eastward across Shira Plateau and make your way to Shira Cathedral Peak at 3,850m. This stop helps your body adjust to the altitude, which becomes more important as you go higher on the mountain.

Landmarks Shira Cathedral Peak - Day 5
Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp
The day starts with a steep climb up Barranco Wall, then the trail becomes more rolling as it follows the southeastern flank of Kibo. You'll see the southern ice fields spreading out below. The terrain changes to scree with patches of vegetation as you descend toward Karanga Camp at 4,100m, which sits in a narrow valley and is your last reliable water source before Barafu. After lunch, you'll head downhill through Karanga Valley.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After eating breakfast, you'll tackle another steep section up Barranco Wall to 4,250m, then pass through Karanga Valley at 4,050m until hitting the junction where the Mweka Trail connects. From there, it's onward to Barafu Camp. You'll have finished the South Circuit at this point, with plenty of angles and perspectives on the summit ahead of you.

Summit Attempt and Descent to Mweka Forest
Around 1 a.m., you'll start climbing by torchlight with the goal of reaching the crater rim for sunrise. The steep ascent crosses loose volcanic scree with zig-zag switchbacks, reaching Stella Point at 5,735m in about five to six hours. After catching your breath and watching the sunrise over Mawenzi, those with energy left can walk two hours round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,896m, passing glaciers and ice cliffs along the way. You'll then descend back to Barafu to rest and refuel before making your way down to the final camp at 3,100m on the edge of Mweka Forest.

Mweka Gate and Departure
You'll trek down through forest with thick undergrowth on a long but manageable descent to Mweka National Park gate at 1,650m. From there, you can arrange a transfer back to Arusha for an overnight stay, or head straight to the airport. Many people choose to extend their time in Tanzania with a safari or other activities if they want to recover on solid ground.
