Itinerary
- Day 1
Paro to Thimphu
Your flight lands in Paro with views of the Himalayas right away. From the airport, you'll drive to Thimphu, stopping at Tamchhog Lhakhang temple and Kuenselcholing Viewpoint where the valley spreads out below you. Once in Thimphu, check out the Memorial Chorten and Tashichho Dzong fortress, a historic structure that dominates the city. You'll settle in at your hotel by evening.

Thimphu
After breakfast, head out for a hike to Cheri Monastery, walking through Dodina and into Jigme Dorji Wildlife Sanctuary where birds of various species live in the forest. Later, stop by a traditional paper factory to see how they make paper using old methods. The afternoon takes you to the weekend market and Bhutan craft bazaar to look at local crafts and antiques, then a casual walk around the city before heading back to your place.

Thimphu to Gangtey
After breakfast, drive toward Gangtey and cross the Dochula Pass at 3,140 meters/10,302 feet. On clear days, the Himalayan peaks come into view, including Masagang, Tsendagang, and Gangkar Puensum at 7,497 meters/24,597 feet. Once you reach Gangtey, settle into your accommodation and take it easy for the rest of the day.

Gangtey to Punakha
Start the day at Gangtey Goemba monastery, built back in the 17th century and a winter home to black-necked cranes. From there, hike to Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility built in 1499, crossing fields and passing traditional houses along the way. By evening, you'll head back to your accommodation in Punakha.

Punakha to Paro
After breakfast, visit Punakha Dzong fortress, constructed in 1637 between two rivers where it sits on the landscape. Then drive to Paro to see Rimpung Dzong, a 1644 fortress with the name meaning Heap of Jewels. Stop by Kichu Lhakhang Monastery, one of Bhutan's oldest sacred sites from the 7th century. You'll have time to explore the area or take a walk around Paro before returning to your hotel.

Paro
After breakfast, you'll hike up to Taktshang Monastery, the Tiger's Nest, which sits 800 meters up a sheer cliff and is Bhutan's most recognizable cultural landmark. Later, visit a traditional farmhouse in the valley to see how daily life works and view the colorfully decorated Bhutanese architecture. Spend the evening with a casual walk around town to take in the local culture.
