- Day 5
Namche Bazaar to Dole
Today the Gokyo trail splits from the main Everest base camp route. Look for the direction sign pointing to Kyanjuma instead of Phunki Thenga. You'll walk mostly through jungle with beautiful rhododendron, pine, and juniper trees. See where the Dudh Koshi river and Imja Khola meet, flowing down from the Himalayas and melting glaciers. Pass through yak grazing areas and the culturally rich Sherpa villages of Tongba and Gyele before staying at a teahouse in Dole. The northwest Himalayan peaks like Khumbila and Tawache come into better view today. Walking takes about 5-6 hours.

Dole to Machhermo
From Dole, you ascend further on the Gokyo trail to Lhabarma where you'll see Luza hamlet. Most of the trail is steep, so careful footing matters. You've now crossed 4000m altitude, so expect bushes and junipers instead of trees. The altitude might affect how you feel, so ascend gradually and drink plenty of water. Climb from Luza through yak pasture lands and cross sandy spurs above the Dudh Koshi valley before arriving at Machhermo. Local stories mention a Yeti was spotted here once, though there's no actual proof. You'll have great views of Thamserku, Cho Oyu, and surrounding peaks. Walking time is about 4-5 hours.

This is one of the most significant days as you approach near 5000m altitude with great views of local Himalayan settlements at Cholatse and Pangaa. Snow-capped peaks, glacier moraines, and rocky terrain surround you everywhere. Gokyo is thought to be the best spot for seeing the Himalayan surroundings. Pass Longpongo, the first Gokyo lake, and reach the second lake, Taboche Tso, which is larger. You might see Himalayan ducks swimming in the freezing water. Continue past the Ngozumpa glacier at the same elevation and visit the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, with Gokyo village nearby. The scenery from these high elevation lakes is really something. Walking takes about 5-6 hours.

While descending the valley, you get two chances to see snow-capped Himalayan views of Ama Dablam, Tawache, Thamserku, and other peaks, plus distant views of Tengboche from Mongla. Keep descending to Sansa, which connects to the main Everest trail back to Namche Bazaar. Once you arrive at Namche, take a complete rest, enjoy a hot shower, and relax at your lodge.
