The landing at Lukla airstrip is quite dramatic and thrilling. You'll meet your porter crew who'll carry your baggage for the entire trek. From there, start hiking through Pasang Lhamu gate and trek gradually for 3-4 hours. You can stop for lunch at Thado Koshi or push on to Phakding for the night.

    Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Start early after breakfast and begin walking. You'll catch your first views of Everest if the weather cooperates. From Benkar village, you can see where the Dudh Koshi river and Thamserku meet. Stop at Monjo where park officials check your permits for Sagarmatha National Park. Walk through rhododendron trees and then descend to lunch at Jorsale. After eating, ascend toward Namche Bazaar by crossing the Hillary Bridge, taking a brief stop at Chautara, then reaching the Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar for the night. 4. Day 4

    Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar

This acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar keeps you active rather than resting at your lodge. Head to the Sherpa Museum, then climb to Syangboche Airport and push up to Hotel Everest View for lunch. You'll get the best views yet with multiple Himalayan peaks around you, including distant Everest and close views of Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Return to your lodge in the late afternoon and then explore the bazaar, shops, restaurants, temples, and local monastery on your own. Walking today takes 6-7 hours.

  5. Day 5

    Namche Bazaar to Dole

Today the Gokyo trail splits from the main Everest base camp route. Look for the direction sign pointing to Kyanjuma instead of Phunki Thenga. You'll walk mostly through jungle with beautiful rhododendron, pine, and juniper trees. See where the Dudh Koshi river and Imja Khola meet, flowing down from the Himalayas and melting glaciers. Pass through yak grazing areas and the culturally rich Sherpa villages of Tongba and Gyele before staying at a teahouse in Dole. The northwest Himalayan peaks like Khumbila and Tawache come into better view today. Walking takes about 5-6 hours.

  6. Day 6

    Dole to Machhermo

From Dole, you ascend further on the Gokyo trail to Lhabarma where you'll see Luza hamlet. Most of the trail is steep, so careful footing matters. You've now crossed 4000m altitude, so expect bushes and junipers instead of trees. The altitude might affect how you feel, so ascend gradually and drink plenty of water. Climb from Luza through yak pasture lands and cross sandy spurs above the Dudh Koshi valley before arriving at Machhermo. Local stories mention a Yeti was spotted here once, though there's no actual proof. You'll have great views of Thamserku, Cho Oyu, and surrounding peaks. Walking time is about 4-5 hours.

  7. Day 7

    Machhermo to Gokyo

This is one of the most significant days as you approach near 5000m altitude with great views of local Himalayan settlements at Cholatse and Pangaa. Snow-capped peaks, glacier moraines, and rocky terrain surround you everywhere. Gokyo is thought to be the best spot for seeing the Himalayan surroundings. Pass Longpongo, the first Gokyo lake, and reach the second lake, Taboche Tso, which is larger. You might see Himalayan ducks swimming in the freezing water. Continue past the Ngozumpa glacier at the same elevation and visit the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, with Gokyo village nearby. The scenery from these high elevation lakes is really something. Walking takes about 5-6 hours.

    Included Activities

    • Trek through Cholatse and Pangaa
    • Visit first Gokyo lake (Longpongo)

  8. Day 8

    Acclimatization Day at Gokyo

You're taking an acclimatization day surrounded by many lakes. Traverse the top of Scoundrel's Viewpoint to catch views of major Himalayan peaks including Nuptse, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu, and Gyachung Kang. From the northern side of the glacier moraine, see the largest Ngozumpa glacier and views of Cho Oyu base camp. If you're interested and have time, you can ascend to the sixth lake but talk it over with your trekking leader first. Many people choose to hike up Gokyo Ri today and reach the fifth lake tomorrow instead. Walking time is about 5-6 hours.

    Included Activities

    • Traverse Scoundrel's Viewpoint
    • Views of Cho Oyu base camp and Ngozumpa glacier

  9. Day 9

    Gokyo Ri Summit Day

Get started early in the morning for better views than the afternoon tends to offer. The continuous ascent of Gokyo Ri is challenging and takes three to four hours depending on your fitness level. From the summit, you'll see Mount Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8153m), Makalu (8475m), Lhotse (8501m), Thamserku (6808m), and many other surrounding peaks. Four 8000m peaks are visible from this viewpoint, which is pretty remarkable. See the turquoise crystal clear lakes and Gokyo villages below, then descend toward Dole via Machhermo. Walking time is about 5-6 hours.

    Dole to Namche Bazaar

The Gokyo trek heads downhill now as you look back toward Cho Oyu. You'll pass waterfalls and see local Himalayan flora and fauna, with rhododendron trees beautifully in bloom during spring season. While descending the valley, you get two chances to see snow-capped Himalayan views of Ama Dablam, Tawache, Thamserku, and other peaks, plus distant views of Tengboche from Mongla. Keep descending to Sansa, which connects to the main Everest trail back to Namche Bazaar. Once you arrive at Namche, take a complete rest, enjoy a hot shower, and relax at your lodge. Walking time is about 5-6 hours.

  11. Day 11

    Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Spend time shopping for Everest souvenirs in Namche Bazaar. A large marketplace happens every Saturday with various goods and gear, especially trekking and climbing items. Take the same downhill route that challenged you about a week ago. Cross the Dudh Koshi river multiple times over suspension bridges to reach ground level at Jorsale. The landscape becomes greener and denser as you descend to lower elevations. Breathing becomes easier the lower you go. Exit Sagarmatha National Park gate, pass Phakding, and after a couple hours of walking with quick stops, arrive at Lukla. Celebrate finishing your Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri adventure. Walking time is about 6-7 hours.

Customer Reviews

Unfortunately the review site does not show any stars for the guide rating. But if I could I would give Gabinda 6 stars. We were alone on the tour. He took care of all the necessary things while I enjoyed the views. Not only did he carry my sleeping bag but I used him for filming me on the trek by installing the gopro on his shoulder straps. Sorry for that ;). Gabinda is a very friendly and professional guide where you always had the feeling not to be alone, to be alone enough and last but not least to be on the save side. Nevertheless we climbed some frozen waterfalls for fun. My wishes were first to him; needing food in the tea houses or wishing to continue the walk when I felt like it. Also he forwarded my criticism about a hygienic detail in one of the tea houses to the owner, which is probably not easy to do. Thank you so much Gabinda. Santosh from Accessible Adventures took care of me while being in Kathmandu. As if he knew what you need when coming back from a tour, he organised a luxury but very affordable hotel room for me enabling me to prepare for civilisation. His friendliness is hard to top. Thank you Santosh. All together I wouldn't know how to improve this tour. I'm looking forward seeing you again - maybe next year?
