Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Mollepata to Soyrapampa

Your early morning pickup from the hotel starts with a 3-hour drive to Mollepata, stopping for breakfast and to pick up any last-minute supplies you need. Once at the Soyrapampa trailhead, the support team gets your gear packed onto horses so you can travel light. The hike begins with several steep uphill sections through bare, high-altitude terrain until you reach the apacheta path at 4590m, where Salkantay Mountain rises dramatically at 6271m. From there, the landscape shifts as you descend through increasingly green vegetation to your campsite at 2890m.

    Meals
Breakfast (Breakfast stop in Mollepata), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Breakfast stop in Mollepata
    • Hike to apacheta path (4590m)
    • Descent to campsite

  2. Day 2

Upper Jungle Trek to La Playa

After breakfast, the hiking continues through the upper jungle where everything changes with each step forward. Vegetation gets thicker, waterfalls start appearing, and the weather turns noticeably warmer. You'll cross small brooks and the Lluscamayo River before reaching Lluscamayo settlement for lunch after about 5 hours of walking. The afternoon brings another 3 hours of trekking past a large waterfall that's worth stopping to photograph, with green valleys and mountain views surrounding you. Birdlife is plentiful here, and by evening you'll arrive at La Playa village where you can choose between two different route options for the next day.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Lunch at Lluscamayo settlement), Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Hike through upper jungle
    • Crossing Lluscamayo River

    Landmarks/POIs
    Lluscamayo River
  3. Day 3

    Llacatapata Ruins to Aguas Calientes

Starting from La Playa, you'll trek uphill on an ancient Inca Trail that passes through old coffee and coca plantations and citrus orchid groves before climbing into high-altitude meadows and ancient forest. The path features distinctive tall stone steps, each one taller than a park bench, built centuries ago and still solid underfoot. After just over 2 hours you'll reach Llacatapata ruins with Machu Picchu coming into view on the horizon. The descent to the Hydroelectric plant covers 913 meters in about an hour, then you'll walk 12 kilometers mostly flat along the railway tracks into Aguas Calientes, passing under a dramatic waterfall from the plant on the way. Once in town, check into your hotel and grab dinner at a restaurant where you can discuss plans for tomorrow.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Lunch nearby Hydroelectric Station (for Santa Teresa route option)), Dinner (Dinner at restaurant in Aguas Calientes)

  4. Day 4

Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

Your alarm goes off well before dawn so you can start the final 2-hour trek to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Intipunku), positioning yourself to catch the sunrise over the citadel with smaller crowds around. After roughly 1.5 hours from Aguas Calientes, a guide leads you through the ruins for 2 hours, then you'll have time to explore on your own and take photos. Lunch happens back in Aguas Calientes at a restaurant of your choice and your own cost. You'll catch the train back to Cusco with two departure options: either 14:55 (arriving 18:00) or 19:00 (arriving 22:00).

SO hard but so amazing. Our guide (whose name I cannot remember as this was now almost 2 years ago) was phenomenal.

While I really enjoyed the trek there were some key issues that affected how good the trek was. 1. The daily description for the trek was incorrect and the trek did not follow that itinerary. 2. At the pre-travel briefing the person did not have any of the equipment. It says on the itinerary that a duffle bag will be provided, instead I was given a canvas sack that had a rip in it and was therefore not waterproof. 3. The sleeping bag I was provided was too small for me to fit in, additionally, the zipper was broken. This made for an extremely cold first night. 4. It says in the briefing that water after the first morning will be provided, this was not the case and I had to purchase water along the trek as the guides said that it wasn’t included. 5. I was not given the opportunity to choose my train time to return to Cusco, therefore, as I had to change it, it cost me an additional $34USD. 6. My entrance to Machu Picchu was not one of the first to enter as stated in the itinerary, the remainder of my group entered at 6am, however, my ticket was booked for 7am and I was therefore left outside to wait. Once I entered, I had to find the group and missed half of the tour. Extremely disappointing!!! 7. I was not given all the inclusions as stated in the ‘inclusions’ part of the itinerary. No day pack cover, no t-shirt and no blanket. While as I said I enjoyed the trek, I was very disappointed with the inconsistencies. Therefore I am requesting a partial refund as I did not receive everything as stipulated in the website, and was forced to pay additional expenses when the pre-brief said that it would be included. The tour guides were excellent and I can not recommend them enough! Regards, Tim Coulter

Agency - 3 out of 5 Daniel (guide) - 4 out of 5 Pedro + Clemente (Camp chef + assistant) - 5 out of 5 Overall experience - 4 out of 5 To start, our camp chef Pedro and his assistant Clemente were excellent. 5 out of 5 stars. These guys can cook amazing meals in the middle of nowhere so hats off to them. Daniel was overall a good guide. I would ultimately give him a 4 out of 5 stars. He did as much as he could given that we were a slow group. He was very enthusiastic and full of energy. He accommodated us well and helped us combat the brutal altitude sickness using local remedies that worked well. The major downside I would say is the lack of history lessons at each location. He did give us a lot of background of Peruvian cuisine and some botany info but it was disappointing to see other guides provide visuals and history lessons during certain breaks. The agency was probably the worst out of everyone. I would say a 3 out of 5 stars. The guide that came to our hotel to give us the introduction ultimately described the incorrect itinerary for our trip. That leads us to prepare our packs incorrectly. Also, the guide that we would meet the day off was changed last minute without any warning or update. So ultimately the agency seemed like they didn't know what was going on ahead of time and couldn't plan accordingly. Besides that, once we were on the trail, things worked out. By the end of the trip, Daniel felt part of the family which is more than one could ask for when trekking through Andes mountains.
