What people love about Road Cycling Tours
- Gold Experience 7 days
Well organized! You see a lot, but it's also a lot of time waiting/traveling by bus. Breakfast is always included , but not the rest of the meals. The guides are nice and provide a lot of info, mostly during the bus trips , which is nice because then you can explore each spot by your own
- Cycle the Dalmatian Coast
A very enjoyable cycling tour along a stunningly beautiful coastline. The cycling was of a moderate standard with the occasional challenging hills, but the views and scenery soon revived the aching limbs. The tour leaders were excellent and the local city guides knowledgeable and interesting. All the hotels were selected for their locations with great scenery, views, beaches and restaurant choices. Local food was of good quality, quantity and affordable, as was the wine! A highly recommended trip.
- Cycling Portugal - Porto to Lisbon
We had a wonderful time and the scenery was breathtaking! Perhaps a stay or visit to a quinta during a future trip would be a nice inclusion? It was great to have the transportation costs included and we loved chipping in 20Euros each to have picnics most days on the bicycle!!!
What our customers ask about Road Cycling Tours & Trips
What's the average daily cycling distance on these tours?
You'll typically ride between 30-70 kilometers (19-44 miles) per day, though this varies by tour. Take the Dalmatian Coast tour - you'll cover about 45 kilometers (28 miles) most days, with some longer stretches up to 62 kilometers (39 miles). One of our travelers who did the Japan cycling tour mentioned "cycling distances vary from 3 to 15km per day with elevation changes between 60 to 900 meters." Most tours offer options for different abilities, so you can choose what works best for you.
What's the best time for road cycling tours?
It really depends on where you're going. If you're cycling the Mediterranean like Croatia's coast, plan for spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) when temperatures sit comfortably between 18-25°C (65-77°F). For the Dolomites, you'll want to go between June and September when the mountain passes are clear. Each region has its sweet spot when the weather is just right for riding.
How many miles do you cover each day?
Most tours cover between 40-100 kilometers (25-62 miles) daily. In Tuscany, you'll ride about 50-60 kilometers (31-37 miles) each day. If you're up for a challenge, tours like the Hanoi to Hoi An route can reach 190 kilometers (118 miles) on big days. Don't worry though - there's always a support vehicle nearby if you need a break, and many routes offer shorter options.
What are the accommodations like on road cycling tours?
You'll stay in a mix of 3-4 star hotels and nice lodges that cater well to cyclists. On the Camino Portugues tour, you'll spend nights at places like the 4-star Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro in Porto and the 5-star Parador Reyes Católicos in Santiago. The Great West Coast tour mixes it up with spots like the Lake Ohau Lodge - perfect for relaxing after a day on the bike.
What fitness level do I need for a road cycling tour?
You should be comfortable with moderate to challenging rides. The Tuscany tour involves 35-84 kilometers of hilly riding each day. On the Aoraki/Mount Cook tour, you'll tackle some sections with up to 1,374m elevation gain. A past traveler told us "The cycling distances were appropriate and the mixture of terrain kept things interesting." Most tours have support vehicles if you need them, and some tours like Tuscany offer e-bikes to help out on tough climbs.
What type of terrain will I ride on these tours?
The terrain varies quite a bit. In New Zealand's South Island, you'll split your time between smooth roads (30-70%) and gravel paths (30-70%), riding along coastlines, through mountain passes, and on quiet country roads. In Tuscany, you'll mostly stick to paved roads winding through hills and past olive groves. Each tour gives you a detailed breakdown of what to expect before you go, so you can pick a route that matches your comfort level.
