What people love about Road Cycling Tours
- Southern Light from Christchurch - Top rated by National Geographic
It was a great trip but the previous rains prevented us from doing some activities that we were planning to do.
- Scents and tastes of Croatia on foot and by bike
We loved our Scents and Tastes of Croatia tour. The company was organized and the information folder with maps, tickets, and local information was complete and easy to use. The biking was challenging for me and I much appreciated that they could get an electric bike for me which allowed me to enjoy the tour. I would suggest that those who are not true bikers look at the elevations in order to decide if an electric bike might be in order. The countryside was beautiful and biking was the best way to see it. The hotels were a nice variety of places to stay. Everyone in the support was helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this tour and company.
- Cycle Tuscany
4 November 2018 Dear Tour Radar: I am writing to share my experiences on a recent trip that I took through the Tuscany region of Italy. The tour started in Florence on October 6th and ended on October 12th in Pisa, Italy. The trip was a magical experience, weaving its way through the small medieval towns and narrow streets that have defined the people and travel in the area for centuries. To be able to walk and ride the roads, see the historical greatness of Western Civilization envelope you, the craftsmanship and stunning beauty of the Renaissance show themselves off in all their splendor was emotionally and spiritually moving. Much of what you will experience all depends on your expectations and openness to the travel experience. If you want to meet the people in their daily walk of life, eat at the table set aside with only your group, eat food specifically made with the love and attention of the owner and only for your group of travelers--that was special and memorable--and TASTY! If you want to be the only group in a courtyard dining setting that is set off against the warmth and glow of the street lights hanging against the backdrop of stone houses and the night lights of the sky above you, then this trip will slowly pull you into a growing love of the area and the people you experience in your travel. Stopping off at small shops for a cappachino, a pastry, or some other warm drink; overlooking a vineyard while sitting on a patio setting in the home of an elderly couple as they loving prepare a warm drink;lounging in the moment and savoring the conversation of your fellow cyclists and then moving onto the next stop or final destination is like slowing finding yourself falling in love with the place and surroundings, to the point that you now know you are in love with the people and the places that make up the heart and soul of Italy. This trip was like decorating a Christmas tree: you place all the lights and ornaments on a tree and see its beauty manifest... and then you turn on the tree lights and see the magic of the lights transform the tree and the surroundings. It all adds to the wonder and magic of the experience. Our tour guide, Elisa Cattaneo, a native-born Italian, was the woman who gave all the experiences the specialness from which I will hold in my heart forever. She freely and willing shared the love of her country with us and provided the special places that we stopped and ate our meals in throughout the trip. I would only suggest two things regarding this trip; 1. Name tags for the first day 2. Using a video camera on the helmet of the group leader and the sweeper at the end was spacially beautiful to see the riders moving in rhythm and harmony while riding. Sincerely, Michael Vogel--Portland, Oregon USA
What our customers ask about Road Cycling Tours & Trips
What's the average daily cycling distance on these tours?
You'll typically ride between 30-70 kilometers (19-44 miles) per day, though this varies by tour. Take the Dalmatian Coast tour - you'll cover about 45 kilometers (28 miles) most days, with some longer stretches up to 62 kilometers (39 miles). One of our travelers who did the Japan cycling tour mentioned "cycling distances vary from 3 to 15km per day with elevation changes between 60 to 900 meters." Most tours offer options for different abilities, so you can choose what works best for you.
What's the best time for road cycling tours?
It really depends on where you're going. If you're cycling the Mediterranean like Croatia's coast, plan for spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) when temperatures sit comfortably between 18-25°C (65-77°F). For the Dolomites, you'll want to go between June and September when the mountain passes are clear. Each region has its sweet spot when the weather is just right for riding.
How many miles do you cover each day?
Most tours cover between 40-100 kilometers (25-62 miles) daily. In Tuscany, you'll ride about 50-60 kilometers (31-37 miles) each day. If you're up for a challenge, tours like the Hanoi to Hoi An route can reach 190 kilometers (118 miles) on big days. Don't worry though - there's always a support vehicle nearby if you need a break, and many routes offer shorter options.
What are the accommodations like on road cycling tours?
You'll stay in a mix of 3-4 star hotels and nice lodges that cater well to cyclists. On the Camino Portugues tour, you'll spend nights at places like the 4-star Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro in Porto and the 5-star Parador Reyes Católicos in Santiago. The Great West Coast tour mixes it up with spots like the Lake Ohau Lodge - perfect for relaxing after a day on the bike.
What fitness level do I need for a road cycling tour?
You should be comfortable with moderate to challenging rides. The Tuscany tour involves 35-84 kilometers of hilly riding each day. On the Aoraki/Mount Cook tour, you'll tackle some sections with up to 1,374m elevation gain. A past traveler told us "The cycling distances were appropriate and the mixture of terrain kept things interesting." Most tours have support vehicles if you need them, and some tours like Tuscany offer e-bikes to help out on tough climbs.
What type of terrain will I ride on these tours?
The terrain varies quite a bit. In New Zealand's South Island, you'll split your time between smooth roads (30-70%) and gravel paths (30-70%), riding along coastlines, through mountain passes, and on quiet country roads. In Tuscany, you'll mostly stick to paved roads winding through hills and past olive groves. Each tour gives you a detailed breakdown of what to expect before you go, so you can pick a route that matches your comfort level.
