- Day 1
Perth to Pinnacles
Start your day at Kings Park around 8 AM to catch the morning light for city skyline photos. The park sits high above Perth with great views of the city and Swan River. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes since the botanical gardens have some steep paths. Between 10 AM and 2 PM, explore St. George's Terrace when the business district is most active. Take a coastal drive to Fremantle (or 'Freo' as locals say) and spend about 2 hours exploring. If you're there Friday to Sunday, check out the Fremantle Markets and grab some local food from the food hall. Next, drive 2.5 hours north to Cervantes and the Pinnacles Desert. Plan to arrive for sunset to see the limestone formations at their best, when they cast long shadows and glow golden in the evening light.
- Day 2
Heartlands Region
Start early and head to New Norcia, Australia's only Benedictine monastery town. Take the 10 AM tour when you're most likely to see the monks going about their day. The drive through Chittering Valley is beautiful, especially if you visit during wildflower season from August to October. Stop in York, the first inland town in Western Australia, and explore the historic buildings along Avon Terrace. Set aside about 1.5 hours for the camel farm visit. Remember to wear closed shoes as it gets dusty.
- Day 3
Wave Rock and Return
Get to Wave Rock before 9 AM to avoid crowds and heat. This impressive 15-meter-high formation looks best from the north side in morning light. Take the 1-kilometer walk that includes both Wave Rock and Hippo's Yawn. Bring plenty of water since it gets very hot by midday. On your way back to Perth, take a small detour via the Tin Horse Highway near Kulin to see some unique roadside art. It only adds about 30 minutes to your trip. Fill up your gas tank in Kulin since services are limited on this stretch. The whole drive back to Perth takes about 4 hours, so you'll get back in late afternoon.
3 Day Western Australia Itinerary, incl. Perth and Albany
A three-day adventure through Western Australia showcases natural wonders, from ancient forests to wave-shaped rocks. This compact tour covers 5 key destinations with comfortable overnight stays in Albany and Hyden.
- Day 1
Perth to Albany
Leave Perth early for the 4-hour drive south to Pemberton. Try to reach there by mid-morning to visit the Gloucester Tree. At 58 meters, it's one of the world's tallest fire lookout trees. Not comfortable with climbing? You can still get great photos from the base. Just keep in mind the metal climbing pegs can be slippery in wet weather. Next, drive to the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk near Denmark. Visit in late afternoon when there are fewer people and sunlight streams through the ancient tingle trees. You'll walk 40 meters above the forest floor on an elevated walkway. Bring sturdy shoes since the mesh walkway moves a bit. From here, it's about 90 minutes to Albany where you'll stay overnight.
- Day 2
Albany to Hyden
Start your day watching sunrise at Mount Clarence lookout in Albany. The views over King George Sound are incredible, and you'll likely have the place to yourself before 8am. Visit Natural Bridge and The Gap in Torndirrup National Park after breakfast. Just check the weather first, as strong winds can close the viewing platforms. Your afternoon drive goes through the Stirling Range. Stop at Bluff Knoll lookout but bring a light jacket. The mountain creates unusual weather patterns, even in summer. Plan to reach Hyden by late afternoon. While most tourists see Wave Rock during the hot midday hours, you'll get much better photos in the gentle evening light.
- Day 3
Hyden to Perth
Get to Wave Rock early, before tour buses arrive around 10am. As one visitor shared: "The morning light makes the wave formation's colors really pop, and you can get clear photos without crowds. Don't miss the lesser-known Hippo's Yawn formation nearby." The drive back to Perth takes you through the Wheatbelt. Stop in York to see its beautifully preserved Victorian buildings from the 1890s gold rush. Visit Mundaring Weir too. The 3pm tour shows how this engineering feat brought water to the goldfields. Plan your final drive carefully since Perth traffic gets heavy after 4pm on weekdays.
3 Day Western Australia Itinerary, incl. Perth and Margaret River
The Margaret River region unfolds over three enriching days. The first day winds from Perth to Margaret River via coastal towns. Natural wonders and wildlife fill day 2, while wine and culinary delights complete the final day before returning to Perth.
- Day 1
Perth to Margaret River
Get ready for a 7:00 AM pickup from Perth. Be ready with your bags by 6:45 AM to avoid any rush. The beautiful 3-hour drive south includes a nice coffee stop in Mandurah by the water. Stop in Bunbury to check out local hardwood craft shops before reaching Busselton, where you'll find the Southern Hemisphere's longest wooden jetty stretching 1.8km. You'll reach Margaret River by mid-afternoon for some chocolate tasting at the local factory. The Quokka-shaped chocolates are a unique local treat. End your day at a family farm spotting Western Grey Kangaroos. A tip from experienced guides: wear neutral colors and bring binoculars to spot more wildlife.
- Day 2
Margaret River Region
Head to Mammoth Cave early, before 10 AM to avoid the crowds. You'll see some incredible megafauna fossils, but make sure to wear good shoes as the limestone paths can get slippery. Next up is the Boranup Karri Forest with trees reaching over 65 meters high. The morning light makes for great photos here. At Hamelin Bay, you can see friendly stingrays in the shallow water, just remember to keep your distance. Drive to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse to see where two oceans meet. If you're visiting between June and December, bring a zoom lens to spot whales. Spend your afternoon exploring Margaret River town. If you're lucky enough to be there on a Saturday, check out the local farmers' market.
- Day 3
Margaret River to Perth
Your last day is all about food and wine. Start with morning tastings at Redgate or Brown Hill wineries. These family-run places offer a more personal experience than the bigger estates. Visit Margaret River Dairy Co. to learn about pairing local cheeses with wine. Try their vintage cheddar with cabernet sauvignon. Sample some local olive oils before a relaxed lunch. The drive back to Perth takes about 3.5 hours, getting you there around 6:30 PM. If you have evening plans in the city, factor in some extra time for traffic.
