- JTJoel· June 30th, 2023We were a group of 11 bike riders, who asked The Chain Gang Cycle to modify their guided tour to unguided, baseed on their suggested routes in Provence. We planned our routes and received knowledgeable support from Bernard. During the tour itself they sent Tim to be in the area and support us in case of a problem. He was very well acquainted with the area, had good suggestions for the routes, and even joined us in some parts. All in all, it was an excellent, highly enjoyable ride, which will be definitely well remembered.Show moreTrip date: June 2023
- KKrista· September 12th, 2019Chain Gang Bike Guided Tour of Provence - My husband & I had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this tour or a different itinerary with "The Chain Gang Bike Tours". Mike & Bernie were our guides and both were very knowledgeable and engaging both made everyone comfortable and made sure our requests and needs were taken care of. This was our first bike tour and even though we were novice bikers we found the pace and the itinerary were ideal. The scenery and the various stops we made along they way were fun and allowed us to enjoy the country side and the wineries we visited were excellent as well.Show moreTrip date: September 2019
- DSDanielle· September 9th, 2019I had such a great time on this tour. Bernard and Mike were our two guides because we had such a big group (20 people). They made it a very relaxed trip with plenty of stops, so even a novice cyclist like me was fine. Plenty of people in our group rode e-bikes, which was a great equalizer for people who don't want this to be a strenuous trip. The meals were all great, and the hotels were solid. I'd highly recommend this trip to anyone who likes to see smaller towns and appreciate the beauty of the trip along the way!Show moreThe Chain Gang Cycle Tours commented on this reviewWhat's not to like about Daniele (and Adam)? They made everything about the tour a little bit better. Thanks for your kind words, Danielle. I'd give you a 5***** review too, thank you.Trip date: August 2019
- AGAlan· February 5th, 2018My wife and I have been on four Chain Gang Tours - Loire Valley, Provence, Dordogne, and Devon - and the fact that we've been back for that much return business speaks for itself. All the tours have been brilliant fun, The tours are very nicely planned in terms of routes, taking in a wide array of interesting attractions, from wineries to mushroom caves, chateaux to village pubs (Devon!). The tours are well-organised, with guides who are unfailingly capable, friendly, well-informed, interesting, and great fun. The accommodation is never less than serviceable, and often very good, while the evening meals ranged from good to stunning, some of the best food I've ever enjoyed. The cycling is generally manageable for someone with a reasonable level of fitness and experience of cycling, although some of the Devon tour was a little more demanding (although I gather it may have been changed sine we did it). Overall, the tours have been very much highlights of our years; we've always looked forward to them with eager anticipation, and never been disappointed.Show moreTrip date: July 2014
- SHSimon· February 3rd, 2018The Chain Gang trips are top notch and huge fun. Over 10 years or more I have been on most of the Chain Gang’s trips in France - three of them more than once - and I can highly recommend them for the cycling, the routes, the guides and the cuisine. Some of my best ever holidays have been with the Chain Gang. The cycling can be challenging at times but is not prohibitively over strenuous for casual and leisure cyclists. As well as cycling through quiet and often deserted back roads of France, the days allow times for good lunches (often picnics), sightseeing, visits to vineyards and plenty of time to enjoy the local attractions. The hotels used en route are all comfortable and welcoming. Most of all, the Chain Gang guides are exceptional - excellent company, great mechanics and by the end of your week good friends as well. My personal favourite trips are the ones to Provence, the Dordogne and the Bordeaux Wine Trail. I can heartily recommend the Chain Gang trips to anyone or any age who enjoys getting out on their bike.Show moreTrip date: August 2015
- RMRoger· February 2nd, 2018I have taken three tours with Chain Gang - Dordogne, Provence, and Tuscany. Hotel accommodations - mostly small and locally owned - are very nice without being over the top. Dinnertime meals are wonderful. The cycling routes are well planned out that are safe and largely free of motor traffic. Cycling is the perfect speed to see the landscape with a group of like-minded enthusiasts and the groups I've ridden with come from various countries (and continents!), so it has always been interesting company. Chain Gang tours also offer a nice range of difficulty levels - from relatively flat and lower distance tours to more challenging, hilly routes.Show moreTrip date: June 2015

Asked on April 7th, 2025I see that you use Trek FX 3 Hybrids bikes. The average daily distance is 30 miles. I'm wondering what the average elevation gain is per day and also what size rear cassette do the bikes have. These answers will help me determine whether or not I rent an ebike.
- The Chain Gang Cycle ToursOperator•Written April 2025
The answer to your question is 34 teeth. The lowest gear is 26 x 34. Our Provence tour has a couple of days of 'proper hills', especially when we get into the Lubéron National Park. With low gearing, we have all day, and our guide cycles with the group.

Traveler•Written April 2025I'm looking at your Tuscany tour. The Tuscany is much more challenging. I'll be 77 at the time of the tour but I did cycle the islands of Croatia last year where I did over 100 ft of elevation per mile. Any words of advice?
- The Chain Gang Cycle ToursOperator•Written April 2025
I measure the difficulty of our tours by whether you exercise regularly. If a 30 mile bike ride, or a 3 mile run, or 1Km swim all sound unscary, then relax. If that sounds scary, choose an e-bike. If you're in good shape, relax. More people on our Italian tours choose e-bikes. In Provence, there's only a couple of days of real hills, and we can just walk any really tough sections.

Traveler•Written August 2024Hard decision between Provence bike only and Rhône boat and bike trip. Any thoughts?
- The Chain Gang Cycle ToursOperator•Written August 2024
With a barge tour, you're a bit too restricted by which waterway your barge is on. Good friends like bike and barge trips. I think our itineraries are the best, that's where we put our focus, and have done since 1997. The beauty of bikes is how groups explore together and become friends.
