Our guide, Rodolfo 'Fito', was excellent and really made the trip into the success that it was. This trip is just a sampling of this region of Central America. The actual trip does not completely match the description provided by Intrepid. For example, the notes tell you that on Day 9 there is a breakfast, which should not have been there and was therefore moved to Day 8 as the group farewell. Had I known, I would have left a day earlier, rather than pay for an extra night of accommodation. The notes also don't mention that you spend a lot of time on the bus and on border crossings, nor the costs for all the crossings. The notes also fail to mention all the extra costs not included such as $10 per night for air conditioning in El Cuco. On this trip you are really nickeled and dimed to death - budget for much higher costs than suggested. Highlights, though, are the Copan ruins.

Guide accomplished matters at best at an average level. He was personable but... Presented little info other than the bare minimum (next days agenda, very basic orientation walks) "Disappeared" whenever luggage including his was loaded or unloaded Actually scheduled lunches at shopping centers (twice) featuring only fast food chains such as McDonalds Had to be "talked to" TELLING HIM" we were on vacation and 3 1/2 hours between bus rest breaks were unacceptable He did not go above a "C" and did enough to be a "C minus"

Itinerary had few highlights (except for Copan where we were rushed). It seemed like Intrepid was penny pinching as they even forced us to buy air conditioned transportation with bags within Nicaragua in lieu of their planned chicken bus. The pupusa place where we ate in Suchitoto was unsanitary and a couple of us got sick. Rooms were dirty (La Tortuga Verde) or smelly (El Carmen Suites with bad bathroom smell that they never remedied). I expected much more from the tour company even though the places we stayed in were not glamorous.

Don't expect resort-like treatment, this isn't that kind of trip. If you love nature, adventure, are flexible and have an intellectual curiosity and respect for other cultures, this trip is for you! I enjoyed exploring historical and cultural sites, eating local cuisine and participating in activities with the local people. I like how the local guides and small businesses in every location are being utilized in the trip. Central America is an overall charming and exhilarating experience for me! This is my first time booking an Intrepid trip and I got to experience a lot of firsts: a road trip across 4 countries Central American style (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua), cooking and eating pupusas in El Salvador, sampling local beer in each country, eating pepian and loroco in Guatemala, nacatamal in Nicaragua, watching colorful rehabilitated macaws hovering over the ancient ruins of Copan, hiking up and sand-boarding down an active volcano called Cerro Negro, burying turtle eggs in the sand, releasing baby sea turtles to the ocean, ceramic-making, watching the mesmerizing lava lake of Masaya volcano at night and many more! Our tour leader Juan Manuel Perez who is organized, helpful and knowledgeable is also an integral part of the trip as he made sure everyone is safe and enjoying, as well as the drivers who ensured we reach our destination safely. Highly recommended!

I loved having a tour leader who was so committed to giving us the experience we wanted, but also letting us have freedom to explore and do what we wanted to do. Really appreciated the care that went into Olman and the Intrepid company vetting various providers in each country to bring us the best and safest options.

Yes, this trip is a guaranteed departure. There are already 7 people booked on the Jan 6 departure date. Unfortunately, because this trip is already on sale, we would not be able to combine the 10% loyalty discount with the current 15% sale.

As per the CDC's website, presently you are required to hold proof of a Yellow fever vaccine for Nicaragua if you are travelling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission as identified by the WHO. Bear in mind that vaccination requirements are always subject to change, so we would recommend talking with a travel GP about vaccinations as well.
